It’s seeming like my computer is filling up with redundant software. It seems like I have three or four music and or video programs all competing for the right to be the default software. There’s Quicktime, Windows Media Player, DFX for WMP, iTunes, Real Player, ad nauseam. I suppose over the years I’ve just accumulated them. Is there any one format or piece of software I can go with and be done with the the mishmash?
I’m planning on buying an iPod and so recently installed iTunes. It is currently making a copy of every song on my computer. (It’s running in background right now. Should be done in a week or so.) Is it converting to yet another format? How many are there? Can’t we all just get along?
And as for AV players it seems like WMP and Qtime are incompatible. Do I need them both? They always seem to be vieing to be considered the default player for different formats. Ecch.
I recently read an article, I think a sticky from Lynn, saying how most everyone has shied away from using IE as a browser. Was I the last to find out? Is Firefox or something else worlds better? Help!
And then there’s backup. How does anyone backup their systems anymore. Dual drives? CD rom burns? DVD burns? I’m getting to the point where I’m starting to getted worried what with all the music I now own on my computer.
I guess I need to do some serious housecleaning. I’d love to gert the advice to do it right and only do it once.
Firefox is just lighter and faster than IE. It resists popups on its own and is more secure. Just download it. You can try it without committing to anything. It only takes a minute and it is free.
External hard drives are the way to go. The end. You can get pretty good ones in a size you need for less than $100 if you have less than 120gb of stuff. You just plug them in and they work. Backup software can make incremental backups for you every night if you want. You can also take your data with you if you desire.
Any input re the media players and the browsers? Maybe the browser question fits IMHO better but I don’t need a ton of opinions, just a few good suggestions.
Thanks
(Oh. And I did read the entire “Read this thread first if you have a computer question” thread first.
Bah. Plenty of people still use IE, and if you’ve got the latest version installed it’s fine. IE recently added a pop-up blocker, and in side-by-side comparisons I found that IE’s blocker beat Firefox’s. The “browser wars” are 99% personal preference.
For the media players, I use Windows Media Player for most everything, but I keep Quicktime around for when I get one of those. If you have WMP, you don’t need Real Player.
