My daughter got LOTR Monopoly for Xmas, and we have played it several times. The twist is the one on one of the die is replaced with the Eye of Sauron. Every time it comes up in a roll, the player’s piece moves the roll, counting the Eye as a one, and the Ring of Power moves one space to the next property. If you land on an unowned property where the ring is, you get the property for free. If it’s owned, you pay double the rent. Once the Ring reaches Mount Doom (Boardwalk) the game is over and everyone counts up the properties and money (known as Powers in the game) and whoever has the most wins.
Anyway, a question came up last night about what happens when a player draws one of the cards instructing them to move back three spaces. I could have sworn nothing happened, that any penalties or opportunties only kicked in moving forward. My son fell on the $200 tax space when he moved backwards, and I said nothing happened. Ivylad said my son had to pay taxes.
I couldn’t find anything in the rules, either in the Classic version or the LOTR version, that covers what happens when you move backwards. Anyone know?
btw, how long does it take for the ring to get round the board?
It depends. Once the game ended because the Ring reached Mount Doom, and twice someone one by forcing everyone else into bankruptcy.
Ivylad likes to play by putting a starting salary in the middle, and paying any card fines and stuff into the pot as well. If you land on Free Parking, you get the lot.
The way we’ve always played it, and IIRC, the way the computerized version does it, you have to pay taxes or rent when you move backwards because of Chance or Community Chest cards. If that lands you on unowned property, you get to buy it. Therefore, I’d side with Ivylad on this one.
Yeah, a move is a move and a landing is a landing, no matter what direction.
I received LOTR monopoly for Xmas as well. We have played it only once and we ended up having the ONe Ring go around the board twice because it got to Mt. Doom to quickly.
In real Monopoly, the rule is that moving back three spaces triggers whatever would normally happen on the resulting space, just as if it were landed on by moving forwards.
I should also point out that the rules do not countenance the practice of giving any sort of reward or payment for landing on Free Parking.
It’s an optional variation, one that’s common enough that the computer version allows you to play using the “Free Parking Rule” if you wish.
Yep, you have to pay. I play monopoly online a lot and that is most definitely the rule.
Okay…I will remember that for future reference. Thanks!
