Monster.com: If you don't want to help me, just fucking say so!

I’ve spent the last half hour trying to create an account on Monster.com. The snag was my username. Every username I submitted, they said, “We’re sorry, that username is already taken. Please try (or did they say please?) [name + numbers].”

I didn’t want to fuck around with numbers, so I tried a variety of names. Finally, I caved and added the suggested numbers.

Then I got the same message, telling me that the name/number combo they told me to submit was already taken! Over and over, every time I took their suggestion, it was ‘already taken’.

Now there cannot, even with the employment situation the way it is, be that many people all trying to register as Copperlocks or CopperLocks or Coperlox all at once, so that the name/number combo gets taken in the five seconds it takes me to type it in.

What kind of a fucking game are they playing? This is like when I was trying to apply for an Xmas job at Macy’s: fifty million fliers advertising “Jobs available! Sign up now now now!” but when I called the number, “We’re sorry; there are no jobs available.” Then take down the god damned fucking fliers and stop playing!!!

So how the fuck do you register with Monster.com? Or is it all a big joke at the expense of the unemployed, like we’re not low enough? And I know I’m not the only one who needs a job, but that doesn’t make my need less urgent.

Sounds like it’s probably a bug at their site, if it rejected even their suggestions. Maybe try again tomorrow, and if it’s still a problem send them an email reporting the problem.

I’ll try to create an account tonight (I was going to soon anyway) and I’ll let you know what happens.

Just because it actually suggests those names that doesen’t mean that those names aren’t already taken. It could suggest similar names to everyone.

Rilchiam, sometimes when that happens it’s actually a problem with your computer/browser and you need to reboot. Try that, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it then works. I’ve had it happen to me before.

i heard they layed off a few (~150) people, maybe they layed off the one guy who knew what he was doing on the website.

Thank you all. Okay, I won’t wish hideous death on them just yet. Anyway, I just got back from America’s Job Bank: thank you to whoever posted that link!

Mistake #1: Registering with Monster at all.

When I was looking for tech work, I registered with Monster, Dice, Hotjobs, BrassRing, etc. Never got one legitimate response from ANY of them. In fact, most of the responses I received were from other online job boards asking me to sign up with them. GRRRRRRRRRR

In fact, no one I know in the tech sector has had any luck with these freakin’ boards.

My wife is in the tech industry (IT manager) and has found her last two jobs via Monster.com.

I’m not in the tech field, as I do business process improvement, but I found my newest job on Monster.com as well - I also had several interviews as a result of my using the website.

I also used, with some success, HotJobs.com. Other sites I used to one degree or another:

http://www.flipdog.com
http://www.net-temps.com
http://www.brassring.com

The people who get results from them must be paying them off (or something similar, hehe).

I used Monster and got squat for my efforts. Other than every damn “non-net” agency telling me they’d help me.

<rolls eyes>

Dunno where you live, but the Bay Area’s Craigslist also has job listings for other major metro areas (Boston, Austin TX, San Diego). I got more real responses from Craigslist, a volunteer-run site, than I did from any of the aforementioned sites like Monster, etc.

[sub]Ok so I’m biased, I found my last job which I looooooved on Craigslist. I like to promote it cuz it’s a volunteer-based site and is hella good.[/sub]

Anyone else find it ironic that Monster.com layed off people? Anyone? Bueller?

I was going to say that…

Hmm. While on the monster.com topic, I don’t know why, but I can never log into that site using DSL. When I do dial-up (slowwwwww), it connects.

BTW: Freeality has a list of job search engines:

Thanks, guys, for all these URLs!

Well, I successfully registered at monster.com. The first username I tried (revtim) was taken. I ignored the suggestion it gave me, since it would have been difficult to remember, and added my own 3-digit number at the end, and it worked.

This was my first time applying online to anything and I still don’t trust it. I made an account at monster and columbusjobs. I found a lot of good leads but nothing has come from them, and I was fortunately able to get a job today with my old company in a new city.

Call me old-fashioned. I prefer calling myself and either sending them the resume or going in myself.

A piece of advice, if you find a job on Monster.com, see if it provides a direct contact e-mail for the hiring manager/department. If it does, then send your own e-mail cover letter, with resume attached, to that address rather than using the “apply online” feature. I’ve done recruiting for my previous firm and the resumes/cover letters that come from Monster are horribly formatted and very difficult to read (I have no idea why they don’t format them for the applicant). So, that’s my recommendation. And if you want me to review your resume, I’ll do it for a nominal charge ;).
