More creepy Facebook stuff

I’m a member of Facebook.

I own some shares of a certain stock. I have never once used Facebook to do any kind of research on the issuing company, nor have I stored on my Outlook application any data whatsoever regarding this stock. I have, however, mentioned the issuing company once here at the SDMB years ago.

Facebook is sending me notifications that some Facebook members, strangers to me, are posting comments on its page dedicated to this stock’s issuing company. I have not followed up on these notifications to visit the page in question. But I’m still getting notifications, and it’s pissing me off.

The only answer is that Facebook is snooping on my browsing habits, which unnerves me.

Now that I’m typing this, I’m remembering that years ago Facebook sent me one of those “you may know this person”, and gave me a name I didn’t recognize. However, somehow I worked it out that she was a moderator here at SDMB. I never once visited any Facebook page dedicated to the Straight Dope. There was no way that Facebook could know I was a Doper without looking at my browsing habits. That was another incidence of snooping which is not sitting well, especially nowadays with scary virus infecting our technology.

I’m guessing it has something to do with your cookies.
I once received a call from a friend of mine. After I hung up with him, FB pinged my phone wanting to know if I knew the person I just hung up with.

Creepy!

All those websites that Facebook happily integrates with are mining your data. It’s ironic that so many people worry about government surveillance when we already live in a surveillance society. It’s just that Big Brother turned out to be corporate.
