More evidence certain religious types are fooking nuts. (RO)

Anyone want to take a guess at how prominently this story will feature in the Daily Mail? silenus, perhaps? He seems strangely silent for one who was self-confessedly (as opposed to fictitiously) outraged.

David Berkowitz was a Muslim? Who knew?

“Berkowitz claimed that Carr’s l(black) abrador retriever dog, Harvey, was possessed by an ancient demon, and that it issued irresistible commands that Berkowitz must kill people. Berkowitz said he once tried to kill the dog, but was unsuccessful due to supernatural interference.”

I have received very strong subliminal suggestions from my Lab that I give her pieces of meat from my plate, but I’m not convinced about the demon part.

You can’t trust a religion or group of people that hate dogs.

That’s why I support the US’s close alliance with S. Korea. Now there’s a group of people that love dog. errr…dogs.

What if a white, Anglo-Saxon protestant shopkeeper had been offended and refused to display the postcard, just because he hated dogs? Where would you deport him for refusing to acculturate?

I take it you have never lived next to a religion-based school or a church. I read constant adverts from the Christian school next door in the paper. You have to sign a piece of paper saying you are a good Christian before you can work there. Do you think that religious organizations are required to hire atheists? They are not. Christianity can be a requirement for a job. Religious organizations are exempt from certain anti discrimination laws. It shouldn’t be too hard to google up an example. Here’s one cite. (Link goes to a pdf file).

Uhhh…

It’s a surprise to me (I can’t read the PDF on this computer). As a rather agnostic pagan, I worked the front desk of my boyfriend’s church, pretty much 'cause I needed the money. My religion never became an issue; in fact, I imagine they were pleased to have someone working Sunday morning.

Now, there might be the necessity for hiring a Christian pastor, or at least someone trained to be a Christian pastor, but that’s a far cry from

since, to my understanding, that’s not true. But I haven’t read the PDF. I’m fairly certain that no matter where you go in the US, you can’t be denied work based on your religion. Can someone post the relevant exceptions here in a legible format?

How do you know they are immigrants? I believe their are native born Muslims in Britain.

The real problem is those fucking Christians who came in an expected everyone to change. Fucked up Stonehenge right and proper―thank the lord for the Tap.

Whatever happened to “shopkeepers can refuse to employ people not of their own religion”?

I take it you are backpedaling from your previous sweeping assertion about discrimination in American hiring.

Thanks anyway for the belated acknowledgement that your claim applies only to certain religious activities.

I suspect similar exemptions are in place in other nations which otherwise ban discrimination on the basis of religion. It’s pretty silly to point to this as a reason why Americans should shut up about religious idiocy and/or abuses when they crop up here or elsewhere.

Yes, yes I would. People who hate puppies are, by definition, Undesireables and must be removed from society forthwith.

Why were there no quotes in the story from outraged Islamic people? Nothing but hearsay. Perhaps nothing at all.

A poorly-written story.

Well-written race baiting, though.

Is this about Scientology?

Of course, if you want to find a hot-button story from the Daily Mail that will really get the masses fired up in righteous fury, Christian pub owners ban customers from swearing.

This time it actually comes with quotes from outraged people.

“Thank fucking shite for common-fucking-sense!!!”

Muslims never keep dogs as pets? I knew you’d have to wash again if you touched one before prayers, but I didn’t realize the aversion ran that deep.

I just feel very sad knowing that Muslims can’t have a pet dog. I personally am a cat owner, but I’ve had dogs in the past, and loved them, and my daughter has two. I never knew of this further restriction that Muslims live under, and for some reason it makes me sad. Very silly, I know, but still…

.

Plenty of Muslims have pet dogs. Now you can rest easier.

BTW, silenus, free tip from a former newspaper copy-editor: The word “certain” in the thread title is superfluous.

Koreans, now, Koreans you can trust. They love dogs!
