Not for the extremist factions like ISIS or Boko Haram. Or for the way they apparently detest Jews. Or for what they did on “9-1-1.” Nope. Not for any of that. But for the way they view DOGS. Dogs - the best companions people can have. Loyal, trustworthy. Able to sniff out disease or survivors in a catastrophe. And yet Muslims view dogs as “unclean” because of something Muhammad said (I guess). More than just that, I’ve lately seen videos of some absolutely horrific treatment of dogs by people (mostly men, of course) in the Arab lands that makes me sick to my stomach (in fairness I’ve seen videos of very poor treatment of dogs from just about EVERYWHERE save for, maybe, Antarctica. But at least in those other places I don’t think it’s generally considered socially acceptable. Well, okay - maybe in Asia). Matter of fact we had a handful of Arabs over to our house a few years ago (and my wife used to go out with a guy from Saudi Arabia LOOOOOONG before I met her) and at just the very SIGHT of our dogs - two absolutely friendly and adorable PUGS that just about everybody else who meets them adores - they totally freaked out! All because of something their PROPHET said hundreds of years ago. Idiotic. And a good reason - as far as I’m concerned, anyway - to look askance at Muslims in general.
I also have a problem with people who are obsessed over being overly clean. So Muhammed said dogs are unclean, so what? Be unclean, you can take a fucking bath. Or wash the dog. Or stop listening to a dead guy from a thousand years ago talk about cleanliness. I’m sure that before the invention of toilet paper, plenty of things were covered in shit. Get over it.
This also goes for religions who consider certain forms of food to be unclean. Lots of advances in hygiene in the last 2000 years. What was unclean then is now perfectly fine to eat. So scarf down that bacon and lobster roll you germaphobe!
“Freaked out”? You mean they ran screaming from your house, threw their shoes at the dogs, or what?
My favorite part of this declaration of self-idiocy is this:
“in fairness I’ve seen videos of very poor treatment of dogs from just about EVERYWHERE save for, maybe, Antarctica. But at least in those other places I don’t think it’s generally considered socially acceptable. Well, okay - maybe in Asia.”
So, you’re pitting “Muslims” and “Asia?”

I hear a jihad comin!
They shied away as if they were being approached by some fearsome guard dogs, or something. And these weren’t little kids I’m talking about, either. Just a very strange way to behave from my point-of-view.
Since this is the BBQ Pit you can take your accusations of “self-idiocy” and shove 'em where the sun don’t shine, bucko. I didn’t post looking for criticisms from self-important a-holes like YOU!
Unfortunately, when you post, especially in the Pit, you can’t guarantee that you’ll get what you’re looking for.
And I’m afraid that with this OP you have set yourself up for approximately a metric assload of such criticisms. If it’s any comfort, though, they’re all richly deserved.
How much more sense this Pitting might have made if it had been titled “Pitting anti-dog prejudice in Islam” or perhaps “Pitting Muslim cynophobia” rather than “Pitting Muslims”, and if the OP had actually focused on that particular issue instead of using it as a pretext to rage on Muslims in general.
Yeah, well - there are jackasses everywhere. Even here on the SDMB. Any illusions I had that that wasn’t the case were dispelled months ago. If it’s any comfort to YOU you’re right - I probably should’ve titled my rant “Pitting anti-dog sentiment in Islam” but I have many things on my plate right now so I didn’t take the time to carefully consider the title for the OP.
I’m not gonna address the majority of the bigoted OP, because I’m too lazy. I’m only here to rebut the ridiculous assertion that dogs are the best companions a human can have. That’s bullshit. They’re filthy and disgusting things, save only the annoying yappy dog I helped rescue last year and gave to my sister. If every single one of those disgusting brutes died tomorrow I would only mourn for their owners’ (misplaced) sense of loss, and inside I’d be giggling like Conan O’Brien.
Heh. Thanks for this, to a point.
Technically I wouldn’t call the OP bigoted, because religion is a choice, and it’s a choice that should be fair game. At the same time, it brings up a very interesting point, which is that plenty of people will want to defend Muslims and at least tolerate such aversion to dogs, because such feelings stem from religion and thus are immune to criticism. Critics are apparently “bigoted” or even “racist” for suggesting such. Simultaneously, those of us who don’t care for dogs on other grounds are often looked at very harshly.
It’s just like those of us who don’t drink or use other intoxicants. It somehow would make more sense to people if I said I don’t drink because I’m obeying the tenets of superstitious nonsense (religion) rathern than because I don’t want to put addictive poison in my body. That’s completely backward.
Thus, I want to pit people who go dog-crazy, and start speaking gibberish when dogs are around, and who give them this ridiculous exalted status. Worse than that, they have a problem with those of us who don’t share their misplaced devotion to such animals. People should be kind to animals, but I don’t know why we have to own them (animals) as pets. It seems pointless to me to bring more burdens and tasks into one’s life. I don’t want pets for some of the same reasons that I don’t want children. As a child, I would pull my hands away from dogs, and people would tell me that the dog didn’t bite. I wasn’t afraid of that; no, I didn’t want saliva on me! Gross!
You just say that to Molly’s face, damn you.
But, yeah, that’s nice bit of stupidity/trollery/jackassery there in the original post.
It’s not 9-1-1. Simpleton.
I thought the reason dogs weren’t supposed to be kept in the house was that they might frighten away beggars.
That’s what Republicans seem to call it most of the time. No surprises, there, since multi-syllable words are generally too much for them to handle.
(shrug)
Doesn’t seem all that weird if the persons involved have no real history of dealing with dogs as house pets. I long ago gave up trying to parse out all the odd behaviors dictated by various religions, particularly dress codes, but that’s just me.
A lot of people don’t like cats, and it’s not even a religious thing.
To many French people I know, the American phobia about dogs in restaurants is kind of a strange way to behave.
I’m just sayin’.
Calm down bro. No need to go nucular.
I thought it was because our dogs are fluffy, waggy, good-natured fetchers of tennis balls and Frisbees who go mad with joy when you come home from work, and theirs are feral marauders with bloody sharp teeth who roam in packs around garbage dumps and back alleys hoping for a chance to kill and eat you. This relies heavily on assumptions and lightly on research, however.
