More Questions Re: "The Flame Trees of Thika"

I read the book and liked it so much I rented the 1981 TV series. Anyway, I had a few questions:
-did Elspeth Huxley’s parent’s ever acrually make money off their coffee plantation? It seems that the location they were at was very dry.
-they left Africa when her father was recalled by the British Army-did she ever return?
-East Africa (Kenya) was a pretty wild place-lions and hyenas and jackels abounded-raising animals must have been very difficult
-is Thika settled today?
I wonder how many British settlers stayed on after Kenya became idependent?

I was in Kenya last July. The main road north out of Nairobi to Mt Kenya and the equator passes by Thika. Having read Huxley’s book, I asked if we could pull off and have a look. It’s a large, developed town with a population of several hundred thousand, and agriculture, light industry, schools, a major university etc.
