More religion

I was just reading the thread on Religion. And i was thinking about a question…
Assuming a God (or many) exists, what would change tomorow if suddenly he/she/it ceased to exist. As in not awnsering any prayers, preforming any miracles (ala Bread to Wine), or doing any other things a God has done in the past thousand years.
Who would notice and how?

depending on your point of view, anything between the extremes of nothing at all happening and the universe ceasing to exist.

Well i was interested in what people think, yes i mean YOU.
And if anyone religious believes nothing would happen, why have a god?

Well, it would be possible to believe, for example, that there is a God, but he created the universe as a totally stand-alone unit, then left it to run (non-interventionist), thus his removal or disappearance wouldn’t cause any direct harm; this would effectively be what happens in the case of God’s removal in that worldview though.

As far as the question “Why have a God?”; I think this is approaching the issue from the wrong direction; people tend to believe in God because they think he exists, not the other way around.

And to the original question, I can’t give an answer except that I believe it would be somewhere between nothing at all and the extinguishment of the universe; sorry - I just don’t know everything.

Noooooooooooo. No more religion.

I think it is impossible to have a world without science, without eliminating humanity’s sense of wonder and curiosity. These two characteristics are the same cause for religion (This is from a scientific viewpoint, not from a religious one). Religion is really just a way for people to find an understanding of their origins, or why things are the way they are. Science is a way to explore occurences in life and why certain phenomena happen.

The creation of the universe is still a mystery, but it is unlikely that the Big Bang was just a random occurence; there had to be some kind of higher controlling power to create it. One could think of this power as God, Allah, Adonai, Jehova, Yahweh, or whatever other god they believe in.

If the technology we have today were shown to someone who had never witnessed such things, they may regard it as holy; in other words, it must have been created with such power comprable to who or what created the universe. As science gives us more and more knowledge, our religious beliefs will certainly change…

is there a way to move my previous post on this thread to the thread titled RELGION? I posted on the wrong one…:frowning:

No one would notice anything different in my opinion. Of course, being an atheist, I am rather biased.

Only God knows the answer to this question.

I WOULD answer this question, but I’d have trouble coming up with credible cites.

Personally, I have no idea what would happen, and would be a tad nervous to find out.

If you want to know what the world would be like if no Gods existed…just look around you today…because Gods are only products of mythology and the evidence that supports them …E.G. the holly bibles…are nothing more than personal expressions of faith…answering prayers…performing miricles.bla…bla.bla…mind games only, not scientific at all.
To answer you question…just look around you for the answer

if there was no more Religion, then there will be sorrow no more.

…oh man, was that a bad joke! i’m on a roll now!

I had a holly bible once, but it was too prickly so I went back to the NIV.

“not scientific at all”; pardon, me, but not everybody thinks that religion/the bible etc is trying to be scientific.

Must something be scientific to have merit?

Nobody here is saying that scriptures PROVE the existence of a god/gods.

Summers_Son, I’m not a religious scholar, but I cannot recall an instance when someone changed bread to wine. Help!

You’d have to completely redesign the toaster, wouldn’t you?

I think the problem here is that you start with a false premise for clearly there is no independent verifiable proof of a god/s performing any of those feats. Those beliefs exist in the mind of the believer first and foremost [only?]

Perhaps the question could have been better stated as there being a change in that portion of the brain which allows for many to have faith in supernatural occurences. If such thing were possible – kind of like hitting an “off” switch – it’d be interesting to see how the faithful would react.

Of course, maybe that is how you meant the question to begin with. I just don’t read it that way. Thus my quibble.

Ah, the toaster! That most magical of instuments. Bread comes in but toast comes out. How does it happen? Truly it proves the existance of the divine. No mortal man has such transformative powers.

I beg to differ; I know several people who act as though the sun shines out of their arse; I would imagine that this would provide more than sufficient radiance to toast a piece of bread.
[sup](But I ain’t gonna eat it)[/sup]

Like I don’t REALLY believe the Hopi sing the Sun up every morning and if they didn’t the Sun wouldn’t rise, but I’d just as soon not take a chance.

Well, for one thing, if there was no God to preform miracles, all miracles would have to be formed on the spot as needed!
