I was in my car in line at Chick Fil A when I spotted some movement in the restaurant. Two middle Eastern teenagers at a table were trying to get my attention. When I looked at them they flashed some kind of a sign - maybe two fingers in a “V” but upside down. I responded in kind and they started laughing so I made up a couple of other signs. They jumped on the idea and we all began making more and more ridiculous signs, much to their amusement. For a minute or so we carried on a hand sign conversation although I have no idea what we were saying. The line moved and I gave them a final wave good bye and they each bowed to me as I departed.
There have been a couple of threads recently about situations like that since WFH became popular. People form an impression of what that disembodied voice and typist look like. Then they meet IRL or on a vid call. Surprise!
I had that happen to me at a Dope meetup. Apparently my appearance greatly surprised someone. Not sure what they were expecting, they were too coy to say.
