Morgan Llywelyn's "Bard"

After weeks of off and on reading because, well, I still haven’t quite developed the habit properly, I’ve finally finished Bard today, and it was absolutely wonderful. I just started reading for fun in the past year, and the majority of what I read is fantasy, but I’ve discovered a new joy in “historical fiction” a while back with Honor and Duty, and this book is another example of why this type of storytelling is so good.

I know a little bit about Irish myth and history to know some of the story, and it was definitely nice to see that a lot of research went into this book. It was a great story of brotherhood, desire, and searching for one’s place in the world and longing. And it did a great job (in my opinion) of presenting the mythology of the Celts conquest of Ireland in a believable, yet mystic way.

Typically, I lose interest in a book after the first fifteen pages, so the fact I enjoyed reading every one of it’s 458 pages says something of the book. Has anyone else read it? What did you think? And also, is there a sequel to it? I know a bit of the legend, so the war at the end was no suprise, but the very end with Amergin and Eremon really left me hanging.

I have loved everything I’ve read by Morgan Llywelyn. Check out Lion of Ireland if you get a chance. I notice that there are also a couple of historical novels I haven’t read yet- 1916- A Novel of the Irish Rebellion, 1921- A Book of the Irish Century. and then there’s A Pocket History of Irish Rebels and a neat looking study of Finn MacCool.

Enjoy!!!
