The only reason the crazy characters on Newhart worked was because they had straight man Dick there to get exasperated at them. So yeah, take out Bob Newhart and Newhart wouldn’t have been shit.

There were people who thought the show went downhill the second season when they decided to go younger and get rid of Mindy’s parents. There was a two part episode “Mork vs the Necrotons” that many thought was absolutely horrible with Raquel Welch and two other women with big breasts and small talent.
Williams’s improv was great but there is such a thing as too hot for a cool medium.
