Mormon church backs same-sex marriage bill

Is this big news, or just an example of the gradual shift of attitudes towards same-sex couples?

Senate apparently votes on it tomorrow.

Does this mean that same-sex marriages can happen in the Church? I doubt it. It just shows they don’t want to alienate their LGBTQ members any more than they already have.

I have to ask… does this mean a man can have several husbands, just as he can have several wives?

The bill isn’t that great, I’m not surprised that conservatives are backing it.

It DOES provide some much needed fixes by repealing unenforceable, but still technically “on the books” provisions of the Defense of Marriage act.

The bill DOESN’T require states to issue marriage licenses to same-sex and interracial couples, it says the opposite.

If Obergefell falls, states can refuse to marry same-sex and interracial couples, although they would be required to recognize existing marriages and marriages performed in other states.

In my opinion, this bill increases the likelihood of Obergefell being overturned. Here’s how I see it going down.

The bill passes.

A state, possibly Utah, passes legislation that marriage licenses can only be issued to one man and one woman.

This new law is immediately challenged and makes its way to the Supreme Court.

The Supremes overturn Obergefell, in part because due to the new laws, any gay couples that want to marry can just travel to another state and have their marriage recognized in their home state.

Plus, the new law provides “protections” to businesses and individuals that want to discriminate against same sex couples.

I’m not surprised that the Mormons support this bill.
