VunderWife and I spent the morning at the Langley AFB airshow. Lots of cool planes, aerobatics, and the US Army Golden Knights for the girls to drool over.
One of the more unusual displays was an air cushion landing craft from the Little Creek Amphib base across the river. It flies, of course, but it doesn’t have wings. I stuck my head in every possible nook and cranny, and I was asked what I was looking for. Morays and congers, naturally. :dubious:
I was trying to find out the veracity of “My hovercraft is full of eels.”
By your title, I thought maybe you were local. There’s an antique fly-in at Castle AFB this weekend. Brightly colored antique planes keep flying in formation over my house. It’s pretty cool, even though I’m not really into planes. I may take the kids down to see later; I can see the runway from my office window.
One unusual aerobatic performance involved a biplane that had some outstanding thrust characteristics. The usual radial engine up front, but then he had an outboard turbine underneath the cockpit. With that puppy, and both engines firewalled, he could accelerate in a vertical climb.
Yeah, the jet Waco is pretty cool. I got a pretty good look at it at Oshkosh last year. We were camped right next to the airshow hangar, and they let me wander around a bit and take some pictures of it.
