My daughter, who has occasionally posted here as Morning, has gone off to grad school in Las Cruces. She got there and moved into her apartment today, after a short trip with her brother down parts of Route 66. She starts class on Monday. If any of you NM dopers see her, say hi, will you? She’s all on her own for the very first time in her life, with no dorm and 1000 miles from home.
Oh, and spare a thought for her mother, who misses her, willya?
Oh, she’ll appreciate that link. And thanks for the encouragement. We visited in July and she thought the city and the area was really beautiful. And she’s excited for school, so I’m sure she’ll be okay. It will definitely be an adventure, though, for a while. She’s been taking the step-by-steps toward being on her own, so this is the next one.
And she’s been home for this past year, since she didn’t decide to graduate early until it was too late to apply for grad school for last fall, so there’s a space in the house right now. Thank goodness for cell phones and Facebook and IMs and such.
I used to live in El Paso and wished I’d lived in Cruces. It’s much nicer up there.
I’m sure someone will hip her sooner or later, but she needs to check out Mesilla.
Also, if she has a chance for a roadtrip, I’d vote for Carlsbad Caverns. Heck, you should plan a trip out there so YOU can see that.
Many also enjoy Ruidoso and Cloudcroft. I’d stay the hell away from Juarez and maybe even El Paso, with all the drug-related crime that’s been going on down there.
Six feet tall, blonde, pretty, possibly looking a little lost. That should narrow it down some. lobotomyboy63, we did visit Mesilla when we were out there, but only had time for lunch. I’m sure that will be one of the first places she goes. Thanks.
Yeah, it has so many tumbleweeds etc. A lot of ppl there figure the best thing about it is Juarez. O’course, that’s pretty dangerous now.
They have, or used to have, a movie theater there. They pulled out most of the regular seats and put in couches and tables etc. and you can buy wine while watching your movie. Also a good place for jewelry, esp if you like silver.
One place I always wanted to visit, but never did:
We drove past it when we were out there, but we were pretty caught up in the “find an apartment” thing, so we didn’t get to stop. I was really sad. I’m sure she’ll make that one of her first stops, partly so she can tell me about it. And you can bet I’ll remind her, too.
So far, she’s gotten her wireless taken care of, gone to the bank (several times to get something straightened out), and taken her brother to the airport. Tonight she’s sitting on the floor in her apartment. (She doesn’t have chairs yet.) She can start exploring tomorrow. I think class starts Monday.
Just wanted to pop in and thank everyone for the ideas and thoughts (and for keeping my mama company!)! Tonight is my first night by myself in my apartment here in Las Cruces and it’s exciting, but scary all at the same time! I’m looking forward to checking out the town tomorrow. Any ideas? Suggestions?
Oh! And I’ll do my best to check out the Coas bookstore tomorrow. I’ve been relying on my GPS the last couple days, but it’d be lovely if a real person could tell me where it is! Thanks!
I live in Cruces and near the university campus to boot. You are free to send me a private message at any time.
I suppose it should also be noted that I’m a male in my 20s. In case that helps sway you one way or another. Also, I have short-ish black hair and a thin build. Love walks on the beach, if we had one. And seriously, love sunset and moon watching. You’ll love those too, just give it a week or so and you’ll see exactly what I mean.
