Morrowind help wanted!

Ok, I’ve created a custome character (a fighter-magic user type. He also has Dragonskin that he can cast once per day as well as Maximum Magica).

I’ve cleared out the nest of slavers in that cave near the town.

Now what?

The documentation that comes with this game sucks.

Can I learn spells, or do I only work from scrolls?
Can I cast spells while holding a sword? (I don’t seem to be able to.
What are “mods” and how do I get them? (I remember the term with reference to “cliff climbers” or something similar)
All those plants/mushrooms/herbs I’ve got have powers attached to them, however I’m “unable to use” them. Why?
What do I do next?

And how do I sleep? I have a pillow, how do I use it?

This is from memory, so I might be a little off on some of it:

Use the R key switch from fighting to magic. Click on the monster you want to cast on after you’re in magic mode to actually cast the spell. The spell you cast is your currently loaded spell. Memorize a spell by opening up your character page where they list the spells and click on the spell you want to be your current spell. Scrolls show up on your magic menu, ‘load’ them the same way.

Load up the hot keys - iirc, the F1 key brings up your hot key list. You can switch between weapons and spells this way. You can also add potions to the keys so you can quaff a healing potion mid-battle.

I don’t know about the “unable to use” thing - sometimes I eat a plant, it does something, sometimes it tells me I’m unable to use it.

I believe the T key makes you rest.

What to do next: wander through town, talking to people. There’s so many damn quests in this game there’s no way you won’t stumble upon one.

First off, Fenny ol’ chap, hie thee to Balmorra, which will most likely be your center of operations for a while. Join the Fighters and Mages guilds, and they’ll send you on quests (the Fighters Guild quests are easier for beginners).

Yes. There’s a hotkey that will switch from “weapons” to “magic”. If you have the default status display set up, you should see a little box next to your weapon icon that will display what spell you have loaded. In your character display, the menu on the lower-right of the screen will display your spells. Select the spell you want from this menu.

Nosirree.

A good place to start would be http://www.morrowindfiles.com/ They’ve got a huge listing of mods to utilize. I would suggest the Adventurer’s 1.7 mod, as it allows you to increase the difficulty of the game (it gets REALLY easy when you reach level 25 or so). Also, there’s a mod that will cut out some of the Cliff Racers, which are an enemy that will get VERY VERY annoying throughout the game.

Well, their powers are never very strong. For example, Racer Plumes supposedly grant “levitation”, but it’s a very weak levitation that only lasts about a second. The best way to utilize the powers of reagents is to turn them into potions, which requires a bunch of alchemy equipment. You can find a full set in the tower of the Mages guild in Caldera.

Remember, you were given a package and directions to a man named Caius Cosades, who lives in Balmorra. Before you give him the package, though, I would suggest you do a few side-quests. Again, start with the Guilds in Balmorra.

You don’t need the pillow to rest. Simply press the Rest hotkey (whatever you set it for), and as long as you’re not inside the city limits of a town, you’ll get a menu that will ask you how long you want to rest. If you are inside the city limits, it’ll tell you “Resting here is illegal,” and instead you’ll have the option to just “wait”.

I feel like an idiot for asking, but how do you use a mod? I mean, I know how to unzip/rar a mod, but what directory do I put them in?

Fenris

Find the Morrowind/Data Files directory. Don’t just drag and drop files from the Winzip window to the directory, though… click on the “Unzip” icon and then select the directory, and make sure you include the “Maintain file structure” or whatever it is.

Also, you can put tracks in the Music folder, and they’ll automatically come up as you play the game. Nothing’s cooler than going into battle with Ride of the Valkyries playing…

To clarify: In the Winzip folder, click on the “Extract” icon, then select the Morrowind/Data Files directory as the destination. Make sure you have the “Use Folder Names” option checked. Some mods make their own sub-directory in the Data Files folder.

SPOOFE left out the final step for installing mods. Once you’ve got everything in the proper folder, launch Morrowind and click on “Data Files.” This brings up a window that lets you choose which mods to “plug-in” to Morrowind. Once selected, the mod stays plugged in until you decide to remove it.
