Mortgage Question (Homebuyer's Counseling)

I have a question for the more seasoned and financially minded dopers out there.

We received word today that our loan application for the house we want to buy has been approved, on the contigency that (among other things) we attend a homebuyer’s counseling course.

Why would they ask us to do this? We’re first time home buyers, and we both have good credit (His is mid-700s, mine is just shy of 800). We don’t have a lot of assets, but I’m relatively young. Are they doing it because I’m young?

Has anyone else done this before? How long does it take? I’m sorry for asking so many questions, but I’m kind-of freaking out right now, and I’m not going to be able to reach anyone until Monday. Thanks!

Is it an FHA loan? They require that you take a homebuying course, probably to make sure you understand how the loan works and what your obligations are.
