Mos Def cast as Ford Prefect

Well, except that Trillian is definitely white and dark haired. Mostly, though, taking the character descriptions as guidelines rather than rules should work out.

That’s true. And I think Zaphod might be described as a blond somewhere. But it’s not exactly a big deal in the grand scheme of (life, the universe, and every)things.

Well, I sincerely hope we don’t get a wave of Adams “purists” claiming that the casting sucks because of stuff like that. Because then we’d have to point out that the BBC series (which Adams himself appeared in (naked) and presumably endorsed) had a blonde Trillian and a dark-haired Zaphod.

I’m all for the casting they’ve announced so far. I’m not sure why, but without knowing anything else about him I assumed that Mos Def was British. Maybe he looks similar to a British actor? I’ve never seen “The Office,” so I can’t comment on who they’ve got playing Arthur Dent. And Zooey Deschanel as Trillian is just inspired casting – she’s beautiful, and she’s smart enough to pick interesting parts.

I bought and watched the TV series on DVD recently, and I’d forgotten how not-very-good the whole thing was. Except for the Guide entries themselves, and the actor who played Arthur Dent, the whole thing was filled with weak effects and terrible, terrible performances. But, I’ll have a tough time thinking of anyone other than the original (Simon Jones, according to the imdb) playing Arthur Dent, and the voice of the Guide, and the theme song, which was simple and somewhat cheesy, but memorable.

News Flash: Sam Rockwell is Zaphod Beeblebrox.

All black people look alike to me, especially Halle Berry and Queen Latifah. Try as I might, I can’t tell those two apart.

I don’t think Mos Def looks like anybody, but he does look slightly odd - which is the main qualification.

How 1980’s BBC budget it looked, more like.

Sorry? The late Richard Vernon as Slartibartfast, the great Valentine Dyall as Deep Thought, Stephen Moore as Marvin and Peter Davison’s hilarious and ironic turn as the Dish Of The Day should not be forgotten.

Sadly, the voice of the Guide will be someone new; Peter Jones, who voiced the Book both in the series and the original radio play, passed away in April 2000. The movie will probably use whoever the BBC cast as the Book in the forthcoming radio adaptations of LTUAE, So Long… and Mostly Harmless.

I would wager that Simon Jones at least will be asked to cameo in the movie.

Mainly because it’s a section from the Eagles track “Journey To The Sorcerer”.

That’s really odd. I always kind of pictured Marvin as a more classical looking robot, resembling Johnny 5 from Short Circuit.

Oddly enough, so did I. Thin and spindly (he loses his foot and trudges around in circles - I thought that meant his ankle comes to a point), and for some reason I’d always pictured a triangular face. That picture of Davis’s costume looks like the little guy on Toonami.

Having succesfully played Chuck Barris, Zaphod should be a walk in the park for him.

Yeah, right? The Adams site now confirms Sam Rockwell as Zaphod… still nothing about Bill Nighy there. Verrry interesting couple of days.

He’s described as having a human face, so I’d pictures something humanoid but shorter… he does keep going on about having a brain the size of a planet, so I guess the large head makes sense.

Wha the huh? Please tell me I’m getting wooshed here.

Dude. Seriously. You have no idea how much you just disappointed me. You’ve got to understand that my opinion of The Eagles is just below that of The Dude’s. (The closest I’ll come to acknowledging them at all is to admit that Don Henley’s “The Boys of Summer” is a guilty pleasure.)

And then I read this, and I go onto the Apple Music Store and discover that you’re exactly right. This piece of music that I’ve always respected as being part of my indelible Geek Heritage, is now forever tainted by knowing that it’s by one of the most abominable bands in the history of music. And now I’ve got an Eagles sound in my iTunes library. Damn you, Evil Death! I wish I read liner notes more carefully.

I think you are.

I don’t think you have to worry about this too much, because Boys of Summer is the most bland piece of crap ever written.

You have to ask? OK, so my mother’s black friend form college who used to claim that all us white people looked alike to her was a bit more obvious, but come on…

Look on the up side - it was written (and I believe performed) solo by Bernie Leadon on the last Eagles album before he quit the band, and it’s absolutely nothing like anything they ever did before or since. The version on the TV series was also not the album version, and was performed by Leadon alone.

No no no. Not the Don Henley Eagles. THE OTHER Eagles!

Thanks for the link Evil Death. I googled around for more information, and while I’m satisfied that it’s really happening… I can’t seem to find any information on it on the Radio 4 web site, the BBC’s Hitchhiker’s web site, or on douglasadams.com. Strange.

Robin Williams would be good, if they can manage to keep him focused. Bill Murray in Carl Spackler mode would be good for the bowl of flowers.
