Mosquito Bite on Scab?

I have always been interested in knowing what would happen if you got a mosquito bite on scab. I realize this is strange but I’d love to know your thoughts too.

Ok, here are my questions.

  1. If a scab is made up of special blood cells (platelets) then why aren’t mosquitoes specially attracted to scabs?
  2. If a mosquito was attracted to a scab, would it be able to pierce it to suck blood?
  3. If the scab could be pierced, would the mosquito explode due to too much blood?
  4. What would the scab look like after the mosquito bite? Would it bleed a lot or would the scab be able to cover the inevitable bump?

Thanks!

  1. mosquitos aren’t directly attracted by the sight, smell, etc, of blood
  2. no, it wouldn’t be able to pierce it
  3. no, it wouldn’t. There isn’t any excessive pressure under a scab.
  4. see 2)

Ok - what if you picked a small piece of scab a way then the mosquito could bite – would that cause a horrible infection?

Would the anti-coagulation saliva of the mosquito be able to stop the blood coming out from the scab?

Somebody’s gonna post it.

I’ll save everyone the bother.

Plus, I loved it when it came out.

Back to your question: scabs provide some protection from infection, but a mosquito biting you through an abraded area is no more likely to get infected than a mosquito biting normal skin (also unlikely to get infected).
Both penetrate the skin barrier (note that I am talking about local infection and not mosquito-borne illness).
