I’m looking for Dopers with Mosquito control experiences. I bought a “sonic lure” mosquito trap last year and it was utterly worthless. I’m sure that the (very expensive) propane-powered mosquito traps work, but I’d like something a little cheaper to run. ANyone have experience with the "Gobblin "? Any opinions would be appreciated.
The hose-attached spray bottles (Like Mosquito-B-Gone) that you use on your yard have worked pretty well for us and we’re definately in prime mosquito country. The smell usually goes away after an hour or two and provided it doesn’t rain the effect will last for one to two weeks.
Also, if you have standing water the dunks seem to work well on controlling larvae.
Thanks for the suggestion, but I really don’t want to resort to insecticides (although I had to spray the yard years ago when I had ticks).
I keep a half dozen geckos on my body and they eat the mosquitos as they approach me.
Keep grass cut, eliminate standing water and attract birds/bats, which can keep your property almost mosquito free, believe it or not. Google ‘mosquito birds bats predators’
I’ve had some success with the hose-end sprayer, but I reserve that process for parties.
I can try that…
My wife gets a kick out of how much I enjoy watching the geckos on our kitchen window. Sometimes we’ll have six of them at once, all hunting bug attracted to the kitchen light. Unfortunately, they’re not putting a dent in the mosquito population.
Those mosquito dunks are just a naturally occurring bacteria that kills mosquitos. Look for Bacillus thuringensis (BT) as the only active ingredient. Removing standing water helps a lot, and anything that can’t be removed can be treated with BT.
Agreed, but we don’t have any significant standing water (the neighbors might, though). What happens is this: We live in the desert, and have flood-irrigated property. The water stands for a day of so until it is absorbed into the ground. That’s not enough time for mosquitos to hatch, but the buggers can actually survive and breed in the damp soil. So, the choice is - no grass for the animals, or mosquitos (or move). They’re an imported problem, and if we chose to have a 100% desert yard (which i wouldn’t mind), we would still have issues with all of the neighbors. So, I’d like to try to find a trap which will minimize the problem in our yard.
looks at your location :smack:
