Q: Hi, this is just a comment. I work at a high school for kids with special needs and behavior issues. We have a Garrett Air Research jet turbine that we are building on to a go kart. My students are very well versed in turbine physics from the science classes I teach here. It amazes me how some of the people asking you about this great car are so uneducated about turbine engines and have the nerve to ask such stupid questions and waste your time. If I made anymore than my crap teacher salary, I would bid on this great machine until I won it. Anyone who knows anything about this particular engine should know that the tires will run bald before they need to service the turbine. The tolerances and bearing arrangement inside this engine are simply superior, as well as the thermal recovery properties of the power turbine section of this engine. Anyway, our class loved looking at your car. Good luck with the sale! May-14-08

A: THIS TURBINE HAS ONLY 42 HOURS ON IT AND WILL GOTO 20,000 HOURS BEFORE REBUILD.

A: THAT’S NOT THE INTAKE, IT’S THE EXAUST GAS OUT PUT FROM THE FREE TURINE. YOU CAN DO MARSHMALLOWS OVER IT, OR DRY YOUR HAIR.

Why don’t we have turbine engined cars? If that thing can truly burn anything for fuel, which is what I gathered from the comments, isn’t that more preferable than using oil? How quick is this car anyway?

Several reasons but up near the top of the list are:
They suck down fuel, and most of the things you can fuel them with come from oil.

Quick as in accelerate from a standing start? Probably not very, since the turbine needs time to spin up. The engine produces 160 hp, which is somewhat less than the ~240 hp the original Porsche engine put out, but then the turbine also weighs 250lbs compared to probably ~500lbs for the original V8. I suppose if you were really serious about this you could opt for a bigger, more powerful turbine.
Also you have a jet exhaust on your hood. You should probably put a lid or something on it when parked to keep snow/rain/debris out.
Chrysler experimented with turbine cars in the 1960’s. Complaints from their test program were that the cars sucked fuel at a horrible rate, there was a very annoying throttle lag due to the time required for the turbine to spin up, and the sound of the engine was often described as an annoying whine. The EPA also announced stricter rules about pollution, and difficulties in meeting these standards put the final nail in the coffin for Chrysler’s turbine program.
I’ve seen a magazine article about a turbine engined bike. It’s good for maybe 250mph and at that rate you’d be able to ride it for like five minutes from full to empty.

What does YDMF mean?
Well you got one of the words already. And I just gave you a second one.
And Mother is very closely involved. Some might say intimately involved.
I saw one of the few existing Chrysler Turbine cars at the Museum of Transportation near St. Louis (cool museum, awful website). It was a weird looking car. It has a Jet Age design, with the “hump” that runs down the middle of the floorboards done up to look like a jet tailpipe. Here are a couple of pretty good pictures of the thing. I’m not an engineer, but as I understand it, turbines are great for running at constant power, but kind of suck when you have to keep changing speeds, as a car does.
