Most disturbing death scene

Another vote for Grave of the Fireflies. Very good film, and one I don’t think I care to ever see again.

The Thin Red Line has a scene relatively early on of a soldier shot up and screaming in an area pinned down by enemy fire. The sergeant ends up running a pouchful of morphine to him so he can basically speed the process up.

That’s about the only horror movie in recent years to have any kind of lasting effect on me, I was very paranoid and extra-careful for the next few days after seeing it. Everybody knows that the odds are against some big undead guy with a hockey mask coming after you, but slipping in the bathroom is a very real danger.

Funny thing is right after I saw that I was talking with my friend about how it made you think death could come at any time, and as we were driving up the on-ramp onto the interstate she got rear-ended by some drunk guy. Scared the shit out of me.

You and me both. I’ve heard everyone saying that it’s an incredible movie I Must Watch.

I’m scared!

I think it was “Mike’s Murder”, where the guy is tied up and
saran wrap is placed over his face, really freaked me out. That, and almost all of “Henry. Portrait of a seriel killer”. Exp. the videocam scenes. Brrr

Rupert Everett’s death scene in The Comfort of Strangers.

Rupert Graves’ death scene in Damage (Fatale).

Hmm, perhaps I am just upset by the name “Rupert.”

The only death scene that freaked me out was in “Heavenly Creatures” when the two girls kill Pauline’s mother with a brick held in a stocking. The disturbing thing about it was how the mother groaned and moaned after being hit with the brick, and how she held her head and stumbled, with blood dripping from her wound.

*** SPOILERS FOR TOP GUN, BRAVEHEART, and E.T. ***

Top Gun - When Goose Dies. I was young when I first saw it and remember getting pretty choked up.

E.T. - The first time I saw it I was very young and was confused whether E.T. actually died or not. So I would count that as a disturbing death scene(DDS) as well.

Braveheart - I thought it was pretty disturbing when the he went into the shed as a child and saw all of the dead folk. Also when his girlfriend(wife) and he died.

I second Heavenly Creatures, Saving Private Ryan, and The Untouchables(bat scene).

Saving Private Ryan. The knife scene. I didn’t think it had bothered me that much, until I found myself returning to it over and over again. All the deaths in the movie were very vivid and “real,” but there was something so genuine about that one . . . how both participants behaved . . . I still physically and mentally shudder whenever I think about it.

Ahh geez, this thread is nearly making me cry. If there’s one thing that freaks me out, it’s listening to people describe horrible ways of dying.

Final Destination absolutely freaked me out for about 2 weeks after I saw it. I couldn’t sleep properly for a couple of days, it was terrible.

The worst death scenes I’ve ever seen on a movie is from when I was younger and I was watching a movie with my father one night. I was about 8, and it was a war movie. I can’t remember the name of it, but it had a scene where a man was slowly run over by an army tank. Oh god, I’m feeling sick just remembering it. I don’t know why my dad allowed me to watch something as gory as that, but it’s traumatized me ever since.

Another subtle death scene was in a British movie called “The Young Poisoners Handbook” which I’ve seen many times and love. The boy slowly poisoned his mother as an experiment, and the whole time his mother was completely loving and kind to him…this made me cry that this boy was slowly killing his mother and didn’t care less. shudders

Dood, I saw Final Destination and got on a plane to go on vacation less than 12 hours later.

I still see that scene so vividly in my head. This really disturbed me to the point that I will never watch the movie again. The surprised look in his eyes was just so spooky.

“Day of the Locust” - little boy stomped to death by Donald Sutherland.

“Thunderbolt and Lightfoot” - George Kennedy torn to shreds by dobermans.

Coyote Ugly, the ending had me absolutely clawing on my forearms.

I’m still fucking terrified that there’ll be a sequel.

*Bambi[i/]. What can I say, I was six when I saw it. Probably scarred me for life.

Whoops.

:o

Another vote for the stabbing in Private Ryan. Truly horrific, as the german soldier shushes his victim as the knife goes in, like putting a child to bed.

In Cold Blood (1967)

Take your pick - the scenes in the house, or the execution. I was fourteen when I saw it, stayed awake all night.

The one that does it for me the the scene in Jaws where the girl is alone going for a night swim and has no clue what is going on! Still gives me the greeps 20 some years later

Let me change the pace here for a second.

The single most disturbing death scene I think I ever saw came in the wrong movie.

Mouse Hunt. No kidding. Supposedly a roadrunner-esque comedy portraying the misadventures of two guys combatting the worlds smartest mouse. Hilarity ensues, right?

Wrong. At the beginning of the movie the brothers (who will eventually combat the mouse) are at their fathers deathbed in a hospital. The old guy playing the father is so old and wasted and weak that it creeped me out beyond belief. It had no place in a light-hearted comedy. And the guy they cast for the dying father role, William Hickey, actually did die shortly after filming and anyone with any sense can see how weak he actually was during filming. Ugh.

What truly creeps me out is this: in 50 years I could be that old man…dying, knowing it, and trying to get one last gasp of communication out as my body betrays me. It could be me. Or you. Or even little you over there in the corner. That sort of comedy I don’t need.

As for Saving Private Ryan

Someone earlier mentioned the guy who got shot through the helmet in the D-Day scene. I’d like to flash just after that.

The shot just after the ramp went down in the Higgins boat where everyone in the first 3 or 4 rows died. The ramp went down and, no matter who you were or what your skills were, if you were near that ramp you died. No appeal, no nothing.

That gives me the creeps MUCH more than any horror movie can.

In Maximum Overdrive, when the kid gets run over by the steamroller. Freaked me out when I was a kid… I used to think it would be like stomping on a toothpaste tube… ewww… Now I just think it’s cheesy and funny as hell, but i’m officially jaded by years of TV violence…
