I thought those were Basset Hounds? If not, I think the Basset from “The Dukes Of Hazzard” is probably the pop-cultural archetype.
English Mastiff - “The Beast” from the movie Sandlot.
(not Bullmastiff)
Santa’s Little Helper is a greyhound? But greyhounds are pretty tall…it always looked more like a Vizsla to me, but yes, as I recall, SLH does not have a docked tail.
Yes another famous basset hound was Cleo from “People’s Choise.” I’m also in agreement with Rin Tin Tin as the famouse example of German Shepherd. There also was Roy Roger’s shepherd, “Bullet” who is immortalized (i.e. stuffed & mounted), on display at the Roy Rogers ranch, I believe.
Oh yeah, three cheers for Asta, my favorite movie pooch - a -wire-hair fox terrier.
Homer got SLH from a race track. I don’t remember the episode very well, so I suppose it’s possible it was a whippet track, but it’s just more likely a greyhound track.
German shorthair pointer – Pearl the Wonder dog. She’s heavily featured in the last six or so ‘Spenser’ novels. Which isn’t visual, except that there’s always a photo of Robert Parker with his real life GSP on the back of the dust cover.
Yorkshire terrier: the publisher on the old “Lou Grant” show had one, no idea of its name.
Nope. That was the sequel to “The Shaggy Dog.”
I’ll submit “Winky” from Best in Show as the best-known example of a Norfolk terrier.
No, the earlier poster had it right – Millie was an English springer spaniel.
Scarlett, past and present owner of three fine specimens of this wonderful breed
Border Collie - Rico.
I have a Border Collie. They’re so smart it’s scary sometimes. (but mine doesn’t come close to Rico).
There was an Australian Cattle Dog (don’t know his name) in Mad Max and/or The Road Warrior.
The dog in “To Dance with the White Dog” was an Australian Shepherd.
Carl the Rottweiler
much better than Nana (whatever she was, English Sheepdog?) in Peter Pan
Cleo was what came to mind for me as well.
Millie was an English Springer Spaniel !
My mom had one in the 80s. I remember that the main bad guy in Innerspace (the movie with Martin Short, Dennis Quaid, and Meg Ryan in which Dennis Quaid gets shrunk really small and injected into Short) had a Samoyed. At one point the Samoyed eats a key piece of machinery and the owner gets really pissed off.
Blue Heeler/Australian Cattle Dog: Dog from The Road Warrior
There is a statue of Balto in NYC’s Central Park. Balto’s body is preserved and on display at Cleveland’s natural history museum. There was an animated movie about Balto a few years ago (it was awful, but at least the dog looked like a husky). PBS’s Nature program did an episode on sled dogs that included a segment on Balto. So I’d say that many people know about Balto, and have some idea of what he looked like.
Sandy, Little Orphan Annie’s dog, is sort of an airedale. I’m pretty sure that Sandy is supposed to be a mutt with a strong airedale ancestry, but in most depictions of Sandy, the airedale idea is defintely coming through. I think the following conversation would be possible:
A: What kind of dog did you get?
B: An airedale.
A: What’s that?
B: You know, like Sandy, from Little Orphan Annie.
A: Ah, gotcha.
At any rate, I can’t think of another famous airedale. A google search reveals that Warren Harding had an airedale. I’m not even sure I could pick Harding out of a line up, much less his dog.
Handsome Dan. Hell yeah.
He was pretty painstakingly drawn, wasn’t he?
Porthos was from Enterprise.
As for other dogs from Star Trek, I recall, Captain Janeway in Voyager had an Irish Setter that was due to have a litter sometime after they left on the mission that got them stuck in the Delta Quadrant. Earlier, Q turned Dr. Crusher into an Irish Setter for a moment while she was nagging him about something or other.
Seems that someone involved with Star Trek likes Irish Setters.
Anyway, you could also include Wishbone as a spokesdog for JRTs.
What kind of dog was Benji?
(Sorry about the Voyager/Enterprise mixup, I knew something about that sounded funny.)
The British “All Creatures” series – Trickie Woo, I think, was a Pekingese.
Really old series: Sgt Preston <something> had a husky type dog. King, maybe?
What breed were the guide dogs on “Longstreet” and the recently cancelled “Blind Justice”? I want to say Labs, but I’m not sure.
When I think of bulldogs, I think of this: http://www.bigtruckdrivingjobs.com/trucking_pics/mack/mack_logo.jpg
Benji’s a mutt.
The only issue upon which GWB and I would agree—would be that ESSs are gorgeous dogs.
