Glengarry Glenn Ross is a fabulous movie and one of my all-time faves, but it suffers from a location crisis. The play takes place in Chicago. David Mamet is from Chicago. The play was first performed in Chicago. But the movie was filmed in New York City and so there is a lot of conflicting information.
There are a lot of references to Chicago-area locations like Morton Grove, and of course Kenilworth… ::runs hand through hair::. And Moss’s alibi involves him being at the Windy City’s legendary Como Inn.
However, the mass transit line seen in exterior shots is clearly Sheepshead Bay, a New York subway stop on what was then the D line, deep in south Brooklyn. The first scene has Shelly “The Machine” pumping change into a New York Telephone pay phone. He can later been seen in a phone booth with the Empire State Building lit up behind him. And Aaronow complains about having a woman in White Plains “on the hook”.
Weel, of course, shutting off the computer without saving it wasn’t a goof. The character was deliberatly deleting his story, although wether he did this to preserve the sanctity of his childhood memories, or because the story just sucked is up for grabs. As for the power switch, maybe the guy did a little redesign work on his case.
You’re right, it’s not but there must have been many who thought it was. Enough for the IMDb to list it as being incorrectly regarded as a goof. Also, it’s not really clear what the narrator is doing in that scene which may have been intentional. Did the narrator shut off the computer or just the monitor? Here’s some food for thought before you answer:[ul][]It’s highly unlikely that system had a screen saver.[]Even a monochrome monitor would have been a bit expensive at the time. The narrator had no idea when he would be back at his desk.[/ul]
This whole business about the Stand by Me goof just burns my craw. Who says that you have to show EVERY little action that takes place in a movie?? It’s like asking when does everyone go to the bathroom.
Richard Dreyfuss is sitting in his chair when he types the final line. Then the scene immediately cuts to him STANDING behind the chair, smiling as he turns the computer off. He could have easily saved his work during the few unshown seconds when he stood up.
As for regular goofs – has anyone mentioned the famous “car” in LOTR? When Frodo & Sam are standing in the cornfield (where Sam says that it’s the furthest from home he’s ever been) a car drives by in the background. Coulda been a Dark Rider, I guess.
SPOILER WARNING.
Can’t do that thing some do so again: SPOILER WARNING:
The aliens from Signs would be screaming blue bloody mary jesus mother of god etc when wandering around the DAMP fields in the FOG at THAT TIME OF YEAR.
Kate Beckinsale rushes to the hospital, her hair flowing around in the chaos, but a few hours of relentless nursing and artery plugging later her hair is neatly platted.
Xander Cage is on that (exceptionally ridiculous poisoning device) in xXx, riding it under bridges in Prague… PLOT HOLE: There is a weir just after Charles Bridge so the device would be unable to get any further downstream to deliver its payload elsewhere, anyway - why launch a submarine In The Middle Of Europe? It’s got hundreds of miles to go to get to the sea.
ALSO, the two bridges shown are less than 10 minutes walk apart, yet Triple Kiss is shown riding the exceptionally ridiculous poisoning device at ‘80 mph’ for about 3 mins - he’d have passed Charles bridge and hit the wier much much sooner.
But then this was xXx & btw Italian Girls Don’t Speak Czech.
Or Russian.
Not really a goof, but when the lads are fighting the Cave Troll and he’s batting a few orcs out of the way the one he hits to our left is seen impaling his groin on the corner of a pillar.
I agree wholeheartedly, which is why I asked if he ever admitted that he screwed up before selecting an “official” explaination to become part of the story/backstory.
Scipio Africanus (Scipone L’Africano)* (1937)* : Not only can extras be seen wearing wristwatches underneath their togas in several scenes, but even worse–during the Battle of Zama, telephone poles are unmistakenably visible in the distance.
Yeah, in Xena Warrior Princess, episode BF12, she was battling barbarians while riding a winged Appaloosa, yet in the very next scene, she’s clearly atop a winged Arabian. I sincerely hope someone was fired over that gaff!
there are lots of mistakes in lord of the rings.for example as strider leads the hobbits into the woods his arrow bag knocks the camera. another one is where as strider - now aragon rushes to frodo after he has supposdly been killed by the troll he brushes a rock causing it to wobble thus showing us that it is a ‘fake rock’ there are hundreds of mistakes in LoTR, check out. www.slip-ups.com
