Most Important Event of the 20th Century?

So…this week we’re scoring this question, as answered by 10th graders. I’d like to know what adults (and older teens, I guess) think the answer is.

The kids, though not given any suggestions, tend to focus on the same few things. about 80% of their papers are about one of the following: WWII; landing on the moon; creation of the computer/internet; 2000 election; The Clinton-Monica scandal; the civil war/ revolutionary war/ freeing of slaves (sad!) ; civil rights/ women’s rights movements; production of affordable cars; their own births(see what excessive focus on self-esteem encourages?); Combine high shootings.

What do you think the most important event of the 20th century was? Why?

The kids thought that freeing the slaves and the CIVIL WAR WERE IN THE 20TH CENTURY???

AAAAHHH!!!

Let’s see:
Russian Revolution
Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand
Cold War
WWI and WWII
Holocaust
Death of Queen Victoria-end of an era
Break up of the British Empire-especially with Irish and Indian independence
Polio vaccine
Atomic bomb
And most important of all…

are you ready…

The birth of CECIL ADAMS!!!

Development and use of the atomic bomb. We now have the ability to destroy life on our planet right at our fingertips.
