Most overtimes in a football game?

What’s the highest number of overtimes a football game has required? Last night’s Fiesta Bowl got me wondering this? Has there ever been, for example, an octuple overtime?

Haj beat me to the punch on the 2001 Arkansas/Ole Miss clash, which I saw on ESPN…or, more precisely, could not pull myself away from. I suspect the NFL got wind of that “thriller” and said “No way are we implementing that OT system in our league.”

If you ask me, the whole college football OT system is stupid as well as their ranking system. Why don’t they use the tournament style playoffs as they do in Basketball and most every other sport does. This #1 in the nation stuff is so stupid if you don’t really have to beat other teams that more than deserve the chance. Take last year for example… why did Nebraska get to play in that game anyway??? As long as they continue with their system of ranking, I’d rather watch a marathon of 7th Heaven (yuck) then watch any of their games.

HighSoci, that is like saying, “I like sex, but it makes an uncomfortable dent in my pillow, so I’d rather pry off my fingernails one by one.”

To ease your mind, BCS is currently looking at a playoff system that would basically use the Bowl games as the playoffs, and tack a Champsionship game or games to the end of them.

Whatever they decide, one thing is paramount. The Rose Bowl is the Big Ten / Pac Ten domain. They messed with a proven formula. This year’s Rose Bowl game, with its worst attendence in 58 years told them again.

Whether they listen is another story.
