Most popular names for Hispanic infants born in New York City

I heard this on Talk of the Nation this afternoon, and I agree with the host, it’s the most flabbergasting statistic presented by the guest, Sam Roberts, who wrote Who We Are Now: The Changing Face of America in the Twenty-first Century.

The answer is: Justin and Ashley.

Hmmmm.

Isn’t there a relatively high proportion of second and third-generation Hispanics in New York City as opposed to the rest of the country? Dominicans and Puerto Ricans have been going to NYC for at least 40 years now.

Jose was the third most popular baby name overall in California in 2002.

And #1 in Texas, according to Roberts.
