Most quotable movies of all time

I can’t believe I didn’t think of The Color Purple. I’ll try to pull some from memory, so of course, I will mess them up, but…

Nothing but death can keep me from it!
I gotta go to schooool
It’s gonna rain on yo’ head!
I think it pisses God off when we pass the color purple and don’t notice it.
I’s married now, daddy! I said, I’s married now!
See daddy? Sinners got soul too.
You told Harpo to beat me! All my life I had to fight!
Harpo, who dis?
My name isn’t Squeak. It’s Mary Agnes
You sho is ugly
Until you do right by me, everything you touch is going to crumble.
(singing) You and me will never part
(singing) Sista…you been on my mind
(singing) Speak Lord! Speak to me!

Yeah, I could go on all day, but I’m probably butchering the quotes so I’ll stop. I agree with everyone that Airplane! is deliciously quotable.

Here’s a question: What about when quotes become orphaned from their sources and become idioms in their own rights? Do those count as quotes? I’ve heard people quote “Stay Frosty”, “I’m dead serious, and stop calling me Shirley”, “Make him an offer he can’t refuse”, and “SAY HELLO TO MY LEETLE FRIEND!”, all without having seen their source movies or even knowing where the quotes came from.

I mean, heck, I bet a lot of people think the “Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow” quote is from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I know I did for a while.

As far as more recent (last 10 years or so) movies go, I’d say Boondock Saints and Fight Club are up there, at least with the college dorm crowd. As far as movies that people know they are quoting, I’d put Star Wars way up there. Monty Python I would assume as well, but I keep meeting people who had never seen it.

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a good one for quotes.
“Watch out! This is bat country!”
.
“The possibility of mental and physical collapse is now very real.”

By the looks of the nominations:

“You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

IMO, quotes from The Wizard of Oz are the most recognized.

The Lion in Winter is very quotable. Not that it is quoted all that often but it is quotable.
and then there’s

I love the smell of napalm in the morning.
Never get off the boat.
Charlie don’t surf.
Terminate with extreme prejudice.
You’re an errand boy, sent by grocery clerks, to collect a bill

Apoclalypse Now.

White people be quotin’ Caddyshack but Black people, we be quotin’ Hollywood Shuffle, na’mean?!

Do 50 bullets in yo’ ass make yo’ day?
Dat shit could really happen!
I ain’t be gotten no weapon!
I loved-ed that dude, baby!
Don’t say coke or freebase, neither, unless you got some.
Hoes gotta eat, too.

I hope you have read The Two Gentlemen of Lebowski.

These three get trotted out at our house on a regular basis. Also, “I ain’t livin’ in no street. I’m living with my sister and her huuuusband.”

Already mentioned, but seconded or thirded as needed:

The Big Lebowski
-“The Dude abides.”
-“Obviously, you’re not a golfer.”
-"SHUT THE FUCK UP DONNY! You’re out of your element!"
-“Yeah, well, you know, that’s just like, uh, your opinion, man.”
-And shit.

Old School
-“Once it hits your lips, it’s so good!”
-“Frank the Tank! Frank the Tank!”
-“We’re going streaking!”
-“You’re my boy, Blue!”
-“You’re… you’re crazy man. I like you man, but you’re crazy.”

Aliens
-The whole movie.

Predator
-“Get to the chopper!”
-“Bunch of slack jawed faggots around here.”
-“I ain’t got time to bleed.”
