Inspired by a report in my Sunday paper that it’s really been a bad time lately to be a gold or jewelry merchant in Baghdad, I was wondering what would be the most ultra-resistant but transparent display window you could install. I tried to research this online and couldn’t come up with a definite answer. On the one hand, large aquariums have very thick strong glass, but they’re designed to resist a steady pressure, not blast or high velocity impacts. There’s the “bulletproof” glass installed in armored cars but there because you’re talking about a vehicle there are limitations on thickness, weight and size. There are safety glasses that are designed to soak up the force of impacts or blasts, but are not especially intended to resist penetration. So if we wanted to put the gold stockpiled at Fort Knox on display, how strong a glass wall or window are currently available?
