Most underrated power ballad of the 80's.

The album (Pump) was released in 1989, but *What It Takes *was released to radio as a single in 1990.

Yes, but the song was recorded and released on album in 1989. Hence, it’s part of Aerosmith’s '80s oeuvre.

Tesla has probably got the ugliest lead singer of the 80’s though. Don’t they?

I third Skid Row’s “I Remember You.” Genuinely good song.

Also: Heart - Alone

In fairness, finding the “best power ballad” is perhaps the most difficult challenge since the infamous Iron Chef episode “Battle: Smegma.”

I was coming in to post Paradise by Tesla.

Well, that and She’s Gone by Steelheart (although I think that may have been early 90s).

I thought the artist was House of Pain. I couldn’t imagine the Jump Around rappers doing a power ballad.

All power ballads suck ass, just for the record.

This isn’t so much “underrated” as “unremembered,” but I always had a soft spot for Kingdom Come’s “What Love Can Be.”

Sorry, but that honor belongs to Ric Ocasek of The Cars.

Since they’re pretty much a 1-hit wonder that I haven’t heard on the radio in 20 years, I think this is a good candidate. Good song, if you like the power ballad. Unremembered isn’t far off underrated.

I’ve been listening to “Something to Believe in” and “Every Rose Has it’s Thorn”, by Poison, quite a bit since Bret Micheal’s recent health issues made me think of them. Never liked Poison when they were popular, but I guess I’m getting older and relating more to the power ballad than when I was young. I don’t think they qualify as ‘underrated’, but if folks can throw out Aerosmith hits, I can mention these.
