There’s a series of discs in the “Pickin’ On…” series. It’s a particular artist’s hits done by bluegrass studio musicians.
From the same Carpenters tribute album is a fantastic version of “Superstar” by Sonic Youth.
I just found an unusual one tonight. The “Garden State” soundtrack has a cover of the Postal Service’s “Such Great Heights”. The original is a great electronica song with a fast driving beat. The cover by Iron and Wine is a soft acoustic version without any drums at all. It’s very weird.
Thanks a lot. It is going to take me years to overcome the trauma that is caused by that song. His horrifying (not horrifying-bad but horrifying-scared the SHIT out of me) rendition has burned itself into my brain and I am now seriously considering a lobotomy
Rolf Harris has done some interesting cover versions; a much-despised cover of Stairway To Heaven, which comes across as tongue-in-cheek, although Rolf claims this is unintentional - he says he had never actually heard the song before covering it and that he only saw it on paper.
Rolf:Oooooh… and it makes me wonder… How does it affect you blokes?
Backing singers: Oooooh… and it makes us wonder…
He also did a sort of folk/skiffle version of Bohemian Rhapsody. I like Rolf Harris; not only is he a fantastic, energetic, imaginative entertainer, but also because his cover versions prick the pomposity of people who take the originals waaaay too seriously.
I was listening to Radio Paradise a while back, and they played a kind of cheesy, lounge lizard version of Crazy Train by a group called Fun Lovin’ Criminals. Truly weird.
Radio Paradise, for those who might be interested, is a non-commercial, listener supported music streaming site, it makes great background accompaniment for doing things like browsing your favorite message board. Check 'em out.
