If that’s the case, why, in nearly 50 years on this planet, having been in a dozen states and five countries on two continents, have I never heard it before?
I suspect that while it may be common in some places it’s unheard of in others. Oh, shocking, language differences exist. Might be something to keep in mind given that people on this forum come from all over the world.
I’d say, of the list you gave us, easily half of them I’ve never heard before, either, though some are more obvious than others.
When someone says “dropping the kids off at the pool” my first thought is… they’re taking their offspring to go swimming. Not “they need to shit”.
How old are you? It’s a pretty common expression.
Take every time you ever heard someone make reference to taking their children to a pool for swimming; half of those times, someone was talking about shitting. You just didn’t know it.
I’d guess that unless she’s lived on off-world colonies, she’s probably nearly 50.

I’ve never heard it anywhere except at the SDMB, but I’m sure I’ve seen it dozens of times here.
Thing is, I can’t ever recall hearing someone say that when they weren’t, actually, taking their kids to a pool - you know, they’re leaning out the window of a minivan full of kids in swim suits or something.
I just sayin’, the expression may not be as widespread as folks think it is. Maybe it’s common in California and unknown in Ohio or whatever.

I have no dog in the fight but in all my 49 years, I have never heard the expression taking the kids to the pool to mean taking a dump.

I’ll bet asking your teenage kids what stall they use in public restrooms is something that almost never happens. Although you won’t always get a positive or polite response you can mention it to those leaving the only handicap stall when others are available.

I’ve known that saying for decades. It definitely exists in western Canada.
I’ve heard it as ‘taking the twins to the pool’, in NZ, which confused me as well, that’s the only other place I’ve come across the phrase.
Incidently, a lot of disabled toilets in the UK have a key system, where disabled people can get the key, (as seen here) though it is possible to get a key without being disabled, it does make being a jerk require some planning.
And in the UK.
