movie: " If I Were You "

My friend and I watched the movie " If I Were You " on Netflix a couple days ago. We both loved it. All the reviews at IMDB were between pretty good and excellent. But it has 9% at Rotten Tomatoes.

I also noticed something - of the Rotten Tomatoes viewers, the one Fresh reviewer was female, while the remaining 11 Rotten reviewers were all male.

With the only two really fleshed out characters being the two lead actresses, and the director also female, it may be a movie primarily enjoyed by women viewers - the Rotten Tomatoes evidence leaning in this direction.

We didn’t find the movie at all uneven; it’s a comedy-drama, not the laugh out loud type of comedy, but the isn’t life funny comedy type. The inclusion of the production of King Lear and the parallels from Lear’s themes to the themes of the movie add a level of enjoyment too, especially if you’re familiar with Lear.

It definitely still has some laugh out loud moments. Especially at the Lear audition, my vote for the funniest scene.

The main criticism I had of “If I Were You” was the lack of characterization of Paul (the husband). He was left as a sort of blank - no way to tell if he deserved the strong emotions raging about him as the main McGuffin of the story. Though maybe it would have ruined it for that to be revealed.

Has anyone else seen this movie? If so, what was your reaction?
