Cheesy, gory rip-off of Alien, with a rape scene and some partial nudity. I saw it at a drive-in in 1982.

Hooper?

You young’uns might find this hard to believe but back in 1978 Burt Reynolds was considered a major star. Hooper was seen as a major mainstream studio movie; definitely a A-picture. A 1978 B-picture would have been something like Dawn of the Dead or Piranha.

Herschell Gordon Lewis pretty much invented the “splatter movie” with this one. The story about how he used all sorts of subterfuge to get it into the drive-ins is fascinating.
