Most of the movie was a flashback. The movie opened aboard the R/V Keldysh in 1995, and ‘old Rose’ was supposed to be 100 years old when she was brought onboard. Then, when she started telling her story, the film flashed back 83 years earlier to 1912 when she was a young girl of 17.

    Don’t know why I didn’t think of this one before. Predates Titanic (the movie, twits); old woman boards a ship, from Britain for the US, and then most of the trip is spent in her reminiscences about her childhood. People call her “Mrs. Hargreaves,” but as a child she was Alice Liddell, whose name Charles Dodgson (brilliantly played by Ian Holm) borrowed for his books.
