Death of a Gunfighter - Richard Widmark
The dispute originating with this film led to the creation and first use of the standard Hollywood pseudonym “Alan Smithee,” in this case applied to directors Robert Totten and Don Siegel. Lead actor Widmark had Totten replaced, but late in production so Siegel did not want to take the directing credit, and Totten refused to be credited with the project, so a Director’s Guild panel agreed that neither man deserved credit and originally came up with the name “Al Smith” but that was decided too common a name, so it was altered to “Alan Smithee” which was much less likely to be anyone’s actual name. Death of a Gunfighter itself was actually well reviewed; Roger Ebert even praised the direction in his review.
