Pass

R rated movies you saw before you were 17 (or the equivalent rating certificates in your country) and when- the earliest you remember or are aware of.

  1. Deliverance (4 y.o.)

It wasn’t so much that I wanted to see this movie, but that my parents couldn’t find or afford a babysitter. I saw a lot of R rated movies that way. I don’t actually remember it (I’ve seen it since then of course)- but my mom said the scene with Ned Beatty (“Squeal like a pig!”) didn’t really bother me (wouldn’t really have meant much to me at that age), as much as the scene near the end of the movie where the hand rises up out of the river.

  1. Deliverance (4 y.o.)
  2. Halloween (10 y.o.)

I saw the bowdlerized TV version, but everything that makes it scary was in that cut. Did a number on me that took me years to get over.

  3. Saturday Night Fever (9 y.o.)

A friend’s dad took us to see it cause we liked the soundtrack.

  4. Hawaii (12 y.o.)

First time I saw topless women. Nothing else remains in my memory of the film, so I probably should watch it again.

It wasn’t like I felt as though we were getting away with anything, but I had a driver’s license, and I never knew why it was rated R. For sex stuf we had Playboy and Penthouse buried in the woods

They didn’t have movie ratings when I was that young.

Some friends and I drove two towns away to a theater we knew didn’t check ID’s. Worth it!

Saw it on HBO at a friend’s house.

  8. Inseminoid (16 y.o.)

A B-movie sexploitation rip-off of Alien; I went with a friend to a drive-in theater to see a double feature of it, along with another film which was even more forgettable.

  9. Two Lane Blacktop (11 y.o.)

Rated R when it came out, though it seems pretty tame today. I saw it as the B-movie at a drive-in theatre, when it was on a double-bill with another (rated PG) A-movie that my parents wanted to see. Since the local drive-in was the only theatre in town, I saw a few R-rated films that way: as drive-in B-movies paired with PG A-movies.

  10. Midnight Cowboy (15 y.o.)

Released as an X-rated film, it would probably get a PG-13 nowadays. Considering this was my first X-rated movie, I was extremely disappointed.
