Nazis on the Silver Screen
And just a minor nit to pick… Because a movie is set during WWII or depicting German soldiers, it is not necessarily showing ‘Nazis’. ‘True’ Nazis were members of the National Socialist German Workers party.
While it is true that the Nazis did control Germany and the Third Reich during the 1930s to 1945 *(in much the same way as Trump, McConnell, and other conservative Republicans controlled the USA during much of the past twenty years), it is kind of important to remember that not all Germans, even on the battle lines, were dyed-in-the-wool, sworn, loyal members of the party. Unfortunately, in the rush to vilify and dehumanize the enemy, America and the Allies were quick to apply the label of ‘Nazi’ to anyone wearing a German uniform or living on German soil, in much the same way as ‘the hated Hun’ was used to refer to any German soldier in WWI.
To brand all WWII-era Germans as ‘Nazis’ is inaccurate, and is just as false as if the world were to consider all Americans between 2016 and today to be loyalists to Donald Trump.
