I saw a test screening of the film in '84, followed by a Q&A with the directors (David Zucker, Jerry Zucker, and Jim Abrahams). They said that, after having a hit with Airplane!, they debated what genre to spoof next; their finalists were Elvis movies, spy movies, and WWII movies. Unable to choose between them, they decided to spoof all three in one film.
