I’m not sure the city is ever named, but I went to high school and college there, and remained a number of years after, and there is no mistaking the city-- from the fact that it is one of the bikingest cities you’ll ever see, to the father eating pizza from a place that was local at the time (logo was on the box), and franchised out later, but IIRC, never outside Indiana, to the race itself-- not to mention that almost no soundstages were used-- the carwash was a real carwash locals would recognize-- the front of the family house was even real, and so were the quarry and all the campus locations.

The field was constructed on a farm about two miles east of town; the PTA meeting about banning books was shot in the Farley (IA) junior high school; and Galena (IL) doubled for Chisholm, MN in the ‘time-travel’ scene where Ray meets old Doc Graham.
