Yeah - I’m going to reaffirm the general consensus. There’s nothing in the first 15 minutes other than setup. Plant your impatient ass for a bit longer and give it a chance.
Fair enough.
I guess it WAS a bit over the top to complain about a movie I didn’t see the whole way through.
Because of this, I will suffer my way through the movie when I have a free 2 hours. I should have watched it all before pronouncing it dreck.
I think I was just amazed at the inconsistency with the user reviews, the score on IMDB, and my initial reaction.
BTW, the IMDB rating has been dropping. It was over 7 when I first looked it up. And I haven’t voted, so the dropping isn’t my fault.
I shall return if and when I get through the movie!
I played it one day while cleaning house. It did absolutely nothing for me, but the other offerings on the boob tube didn’t excite me either. I’m pretty sure I didn’t laugh at all.
I didn’t see “This is the End” because it looked like an insufferable vanity flick. “The World’s End,” however, was goddamned awesome.
I was really looking forward to seeing this one but was actually pretty disappointed in it. I think I watched the majority of it (up to the part where there’s some kind of beast outside) and kind of gave up on it since I wasn’t laughing very much.
Just a lot of them yelling and arguing with eachother mixed with “aaaaahhhhh! Oh my god! Did you just see that!”
I liked it. I particularly laughed at the scene where Franco is being saved but he’s being such a dick about it he gets dropped back into cannibals
I think it’s pretty fair to say this is a very divisive movie. I thought it was pretty funny, but didn’t love it. I like Rogan and Franco, but not so much Hill and McBride. Fun, a few decent laughs, some goofy visuals, and a plot that was slightly more interesting than I thought.
My girlfriend hated it so much she walked out of the theater half an hour in (we didn’t go together). IIRC, she said it felt like they weren’t really trying. I can buy that.
Don’t listen to these people. 15 minutes of that movie is 14 too many. It is Sandler-esque in its “Here’s millions of dollars, go blow it while you film you and your friends getting high and pretending you’re off the cuff funny”.
I like Seth, love Cera and Watson, and enjoy many of their other movies. But This is the End is stupid, self-indulgent, and, worst of all, not noticeably funny.
So save yourself a bloated hour and a half and don’t bother with the rest of the film. Gk watch World’s End instead.
I doubt if I started watching a comedy with that attitude I would find it as funny if I didn’t. One really needs to be in a good mood and have high hopes to find a comedy funny. I thought it was pretty damn funny. A lot better than The Interview.
Scowls at screen MAKE ME LAUGH, DAMMIT! >:/ ENTERTAIN ME, YOU BASTARDS!!
It was one of the funniest movies I have seen in a long time. If you do not know those involved and both their real life personalities and their on screen personas then you won’t get a lot of the jokes. Especially at the party. The jokes there are rapid fire with a lot of funny throw away lines. But only if you are aware of who the actors are because they are lampooning the hell out of themselves. And if you think all humor should be in good taste don’t bother watching. It dragged a little in the middle and with the set up but made up for it with a lot of laughs. My girlfriend was not as familiar with all of the actors and comedians as I was but she still managed to embarrass herself by laughing too loud in the theater.
It’s intelligently stupid (not stupid stupid like Adam Sandler). I like intelligently stupid so I enjoyed it at the theater.
I must have missed the intelligent part of the jizz jokes, “house bitch” idiocy, and misunderstandings about rape, and friends beating the shit out of each other.
There are a few funny moments (“is it bad?”), but mostly it was an hour and a half of dick jokes and attempts to play against perceptions of self-indulgent actors. I loved the “where was that in the Green Hornet?” joke, but it was one gag beaten mercilessly into the ground for an entire movie.
Don’t count out the fact that you watched it on cable.
Cable is pretty cool, but can censor a lot of things and a movie like this needs to be watched in it’s full uncensored glory
I would not consider 6.8 a “lofty score.” If all I was going by was the score alone on Imdb and had no other information, I’d turn my nose up at anything below a 7.
I loved Jonah Hill in this w/ the way he portrayed himself. One of the best things he’s done. His praying scene was gold: “God… it’s me, Jonah… from Moneyball.”
Also liked how they made James Franco kind of weirdly in love with/obsessed w/ Seth.
You already said it so I won’t pile on about the 15 min thing…
I thought the middle hour was really funny. First 15 minutes and last 15 minutes were meh, but the interactions between the characters trapped in the house was hysterical. My favorite scene was when Franco found a crusty pornomag and he and McBride had a shouting match over who was gonna jiz where. It was pretty funny.
Actualyl kind of gory too, more than I’d expected.
For those who liked the movie: Pretend for a second that you knew nothing about Franco, or Rogan, or anyone else in the movie. Take that one, highly repeated, joke out of the movie. Pretend you didn’t know/care that the characters were playing different versions of themselves; that James Franco isn’t playing off his roles, that Jonah Hill wasn’t in Moneyball, that Cera is seen as a good guy, that McBride is known for playing asinine characters.
Would you still have liked it? Seems almost every positive comment in this thread was about that one joke. Or the dick jokes.
To me, it was one joke “Hey! I know that guy and he’s not like his pubic persona! How funny” mixed with dick and fart jokes, and run into the ground.
Right. That’s the joke. Without it there isn’t a movie.
Yep. The movie is very funny (I think) if you’ve watched and enjoyed some of their movies (especially Pineapple Express). Otherwise, it’s probably pretty bewildering.
