Movie scene lagniappe

Another thread got me to thinking about this … what movies or TV shows have you seen that throw in a little nod to the fans of the source material?

For example, in the Stephen King novella “Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption,” the narrator, Red, is a white Irish guy with red hair. In the movie “The Shawshank Redemption,” Red is played by Morgan Freeman, who is definitely not white, and to my knowledge is not Irish.

In one scene, Freeman/Red is tossing a baseball while Tim Robbins (Andy Dufresne) talks with him. Robbins/Dufresne asks Freeman/Red, “So why do they call you Red?”

Freeman pauses for a moment, then says, “Maybe it’s because I’m Irish.” And gives a little smile and a nod, as if to say “Yes, I know it’s ridiculous, but that’s my story and I’m sticking with it.”

The scene wasn’t necessary at all in the overall course of the movie, but to me it was a brief homage to the fans of the King novella, acknowledging the departure it was making while still staying true to the overall story.

On a slightly different tack, in last summer’s “Iron Man”, James “Rhodey” Rhodes sees a suit of silver armor in Tony Stark’s lab/garage, and pauses briefly; then he says “Next time” (or something along those lines) in a clear homage to War Machine in the comics.

Got any others?

In Superman, Christopher Reeve as Clark Kent looking for a place to change and glancing helplessly at the little phone kiosk.

In X-men, when Wolverine comments on the uniforms, Cyclops says something like, “What were you expecting? Yellow spandex?” I think this is reference to the comic books.

Yeah, there’s a bunch in the X-Men movies - like the Sentinels in the training scene from X3.

Or how about Worf saying “we do not like to talk about it” when commenting on the not-ridged foreheads of the TOS Klingons?
