I’ve read that genuine real boo was smoked onscreen in Easy Rider, and that Jack Nicholson was thoroughly baked throughout the filming of the campfire scene.
An actor who was already stoned, playing a character who smokes his first joint on camera, and slowly gets stoned.
Are we just talking about scenes where the character is also supposed to be drunk or scenes where the character is not supposed to be drunk but the actor is?
It didn’t make the release, but Robert Shaw shot the first takes of the “four hundred men went into the water…” monologue in Jaws so drunk he couldn’t speak the lines. His justification was realism; Spielberg’s response was “Let’s just act next time.”
I didn’t necessarily NOTICE that anyone was drunk or high on camera, but I’ve heard quite a few actors admit that they were drunk or high while filming or videotaping.
Mackenzie Philips often used coke while shooting ***One Day at a Time ***and says she met fans who told her it was very noticeable.
Sid Caesar has admitted being so drunk and so high so often that there are entire movies he’s made that he has NO memory of making.
Carrier Fisher in pretty much all of* The Star Wars Holiday Special*. But then, I think I’d have to have bourbon sloshing around the bottom of my eyeballs to appear on such a turkey.
Deckard’s boss in “Blade Runner,” perhaps? It’s never stated that’s he’s drunk, but he sure seems like the drink-all-afternoon detective to me. And the actor actually seems drunk.
