Yes, this is exactly the kind of thing I was trying to prevent: I don’t want just memorable songs about the villain; it has to be songs that the producers were so proud of they made it the theme song of the entire production.
Huh. Not really on topic, but I just realized right now that the Jaws theme sounds just like Stravinsky. I guess I should go post it in my “obvious stuff you just noticed” thread.
To me, it sounds like Prokofiev’s score for the big battle scene on the ice, between the Russians and the Teutonic Knights, in the epic film ***Alexander Nevsky. ***
I don’t remember that song at all. I bet “Mister Grinch” is the only song most people remember from the animated version of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”
The villain was named Emilio Largo, not Thunderball. The song was in no way about him. “Operation Thunderball” was MI6’s scheme to recover the stolen weapons. The song could arguably be said to be about Bond, but I don’t see how it applies to Largo.
I know that the song is “Thunderball”, and there’s nobody of that name in the film (as noted, it’s the name of the operation), but the song is clearly about a person, possibly metaphotrically.
and this person is a pretty grabby, antisocial individual --“He acts while other men just talk”. “He looks at the world and wants it all”. “His needs are more, so he gives less.” Sounds like a Bond villain.
Of course, a lot of critics have declared being anti-Bond in recent years, and I’m sure they’d say the above lines characterize the materialistic and misogynistic Bond. After all, his family motto is “The World is not Enough.” Looks at The World And Wants It All, indeed.
