Movies about the social aspects of the internet

I was arguing with my co-workers today about how movies about the internet almost always have technology as the central theme, and how they ignore the sociological issues. One of the few movies that attempted this is “You Got Mail”, and that was a 2 hour AOL commercial which doesn’t count. Anyone else know about any movies that touch more on the effects of technology upon social situations versus movies about the technology itself.

you know, i always think the same thing, but its funny you mention it because the other day i saw this screening for a new independent film coming out called “online”. its about people’s relationships over the internet, especially via webcams. what i was surprised about is that they took a non-exciting subject matter and made it exciting to watch. probably the best part was about meeting people from online in real-life and how it can often be not quite what you expected. i can tell you from personal experience, its very true! i think their site is www.onlinethemovie.com if you want to see it for yourself.

neither movie has it as a central theme, but both “the net” and “copycat” deal with the idea of chat rooms for social purpose. in both cases the only social interaction for the reclusive lead characters. … neither movie is all that great.
