Movies and TV shows that need Remakes

Forbidden Planet could stand a remake with today’s special effects.

I’d like to see a LOTR treatment of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy trilogy (meaning 1 movie per book, big budget and remain fairly faithful to the plot and characters).

Ditto Dracula.

The world is still waiting for a definitive, true-to-the-book version. (It’s a shame, too. The book is so beautifully cinematic in its descriptiveness that it begs for a movie done right.)

I like the Kolchak idea, too.

Actually, the over-wrought and much-maligned Kenneth Branagh version was fairly faithful to the book (especially in matching the excessively florid tone of the writing).

As for Kolchak, The Night Stalker, I have mixed feelings. On one hand, I think it could be great in the right hands (and if they cast either Bill Murray or Michael Keaton as Kolchak). Then again, The X-Files was such a logical extension of the show that any redoing of Kolchak seems pointless.

Steel, with Avery Brooks instead of *@#% Shaq.

I’m surprised MASH* hasn’t been remade yet, unless you count China Beach

Two that I’ve always wanted to make when I start my second career as a movie director/producer:

  1. An all-out, big budget, totally serious and scary version of Plan 9 from Outer Space Too bad Tim Burton’s last “reimagining” didn’t go so well, or I’d hire him.

  2. A dark, stylized, gritty, and “realistic” take on Star Wars. This one would probably have to be long after Lucas’s death, or he wouldn’t hear of it. I’m picturing an almost live-action anime type style. The force would be the only implausible thing, but I’d make physics-obeying spaceships, lightsabers that actually are made of something, so the light has a reason to just stop. Totally an homage, not meant to be “better”. Just more of a what-if?
