Movies [and TV] that would be greatly improved by recasting the lead

My Best Friend’s Wedding was on TV this weekend, and I was reminded how this charming film might have singlehandedly been able to revive and transform the live-action movie musical if it weren’t for the horribly miscast Julia Roberts. I saw a tree on a street near my house that would have done a much better job.

I know I am in the minority, but Russell Crowe just sucks the life out of any movie he’s in, in my opinion. I really enjoyed “Master and Commander”, but it would have been so much better with a different actor in the lead - Ciaran Hinds and Paul McGann come to mind immediately, having seen them in period naval roles.

Yes yes yes. He makes that version of the show nearly un-watchable (except for the fact that it’s the only thing to watch on broadcast TV at midnight on Sundays).

I would have really liked to see Christopher Walken play the role of Willy Wonka. Instead we got Johnny Depp channeling Michael Jackson.

Feh, you have basically the same archetypes across all three shows. Granted, Sunglasses Man Horatio tends to be more melodramatic than Blink Man Grissom or Stare Man Taylor (they must live in some sort of alternate universe because nobody’s remarked on his remarkable likeness to Gary Sinise :P), but you pretty much have to turn off part of your brain to watch any of them.

And CSI: Miami is fun to watch just for the little shoutouts to South Florida, since I live about an hour north of Miami. Whenever something bad goes down, I like to joke with my friends “Where’s Horatio when you need him?”

This I agree 100%. He was, in his own words, o/~ creepy o/~

Dude…it’s Keanu. Reeves. Wearing. A. Frock. Coat. There are maybe three or four points in the film where he shows any appreciable emotion, and of those, in the few lines he actually speaks, he does it with a slightly better accent than Kevin Costner’s Robin Hood. Kermit the bloody frog could have done a better job.

I mean that last bit in the most literal sense—Kermit the frog, actually covered with blood, would have been more expressive, gained more audience sympathy, and had better hair to boot.

Man, I miss Jim Henson. :frowning:

No way. He’s the only reason the show is bearable. Without Caruso’s slump-shouldered inexplicable-rising-voice camp, the show would be nothing more than the worst cop show on tv.

Willy was written to have the size and build of Hoffman. When they cast the play, the actors kept getting bigger and bigger until they got to Cobb. Apparently onstage, the play seemed to overwhelm the smaller actors.

Worst ever was Gerard Butler in Phantom of the Opera. I expected the Phantom to be an accomplished singer and he was at best only decent.

Repeatedly, every single week. Like Kenny from South Park, only the cry would be, “You killed ____ the bastard!”

LOL.

I used to think Leslie Howard was miscast as Ashley in “Gone With the Wind” but after reading the novel I’ll admit I was wrong. Ashley was supposed to be wimpy and it showed how immature Scarlett was by hanging on to her blind obsessive devotion to him. Rhett was everything that Ashley wasn’t (including being a raucous lover), but she didn’t appreciate him until he was, well, gone with the wind.

I think **Tom Cruise ** was horribly miscast as Lestat in “Interview with the Vampire.” Lestat was supposed to be blonde and flamboyant. Tom Cruise can pull off a lot of things but not that. He looked ridiculous in that wig and it completely spoiled the suspension of disbelief. Brad Pitt and he should have flopped roles, IMO.

More recently, I thought that **Keira Knightley ** was miscast as Elizabeth Bennett in Pride & Prejudice. She overplayed the role, IMO, and made Elizabeth far more brash and “modern” than she was. Elizabeth was trapped by being a woman in a man’s world, yes, but she was still firmly entrenched in society and played by the rules. In fact, she was mortified again and again by her sister and mother’s lack of propriety.

For a recent example…

I was very dissapointed with the casting of Ming in the new Flash Gordon series. SO much so I haven’t even watched the second one yet {but not the main reason :stuck_out_tongue: }

So interesting how we all look at things differently. Unlike PunditLisa, I loved Keira Knightley in “Pride and Prejudice”. She underplayed many moments, actually. A wonderful performance.

There were other actors in the movie besides Jessica?

I think that every movie that Julia Roberts starred in would have been improved by replacing her, with the one exception of “Pretty Woman.” I could actually stand Ol’ Horseface in that one.

It’s so obvious I can’t believe no one hadn’t already said it.

Speaking of Wedding movies, I felt that way about Four Weddings and a Funeral. Andie McDowell was so insipid and irritating…I didn’t get why Hugh Grant was falling over himself for her. Originally, Jeanne Tripplehorn was meant to play her part. I wish that had happened.

I felt the same way about Julia Roberts (again) in Notting Hill. Granted, the character of Anna was written as cold and bitchy, but someone more vibrant/animated could’ve done a better job.

I feel certain that my grandmother would have made a better Harold Lauder than Corin Nemec did in The Stand, and she had been dead for 2 years when it came out.

Well, if we’re going to talk about “The Stand,” then I vote for re-casting Molly Ringwald, too. And Laura San Giacomo. Other than that, I thought most other casting choices were very good, especially Gary Sinise.
