Movies Everybody Else Likes Which You Hate...And Vice-Versa

I’ll admit to owning it on Blu-ray, but I certainly don’t love it!

I hated Moonrise Kingdom, which is being widely appreciated lately.

I also dislike Fight Club and all the recent Christopher Nolan movies (Dark Knights, Inception)

Rex Reed…is that you!?

Wow! Why do you own it on blu-ray? Is it a guilty pleasure? So bad it’s good? Someone buy it for you?

I don’t know but I bet he owns a rubber suit with nipples on it.

Yay, I’m fashionable!

You’re forgetting that Danny changed, too - he’s dressed like a prep when he goes to the carnival. Granted, when Sandy shows up dressed like a greaser that goes out the window, because everyone - men and women - is on board with her change. It’s less about only women having to change than about prudes (or perceived prudes) lightening up.

I loved:

Meet the Feebles
Joysticks
Titan A.E.
Rock & Rule

Ugh.

I avoided Sahara after learning McConaughey and Zahn were the leads. Anyway, I watched that film last night after reading this, and the film sucked.

I mean, it sucked as much as I thought it would way back when it came out.

No, it sucked worse than that.

But I will give you Joe Vs the Volcano.

Well, the titel of the thread IS “Movies Everybody Else Likes WHich you Hate..and Vice Versa.” If everyone liked Sahara it wouldn’t qualify, would it?

Liked: I’ve never actually heard anyone even mention the Big Lebowski except in brief reference online although such reference is invariably positive. I thought it was a good movie though I can’t remember much of anything from it.

Hated: I didn’t find Borat funny although it was a popular comedy several years ago. The dance scene was about the only thing I liked in Napoleon Dynamite.

I always said that all they needed to do to make the ending appropriate was to have Danny wear his letter sweater when they drove off into the sunset. This would show compromise between them, not her completely abandoning her style for his.

That’s a good point.

I liked the Pierce Brosnan James Bond movies. (Yes, I’ve already been told I’m objectively wrong on this one, no worries. No need to form a queue.)

I intensely disliked the Captain America movie, though my friends thought it was pretty good. Not sure what the Dope’s take is on that one. It felt like a pulled-punches Hellboy parody, and I’m not a huge fan of Hellboy in the first place.

I bought it and Batman Forever at the same time. Batman Forever was my favorite of the movies from that series, so I went ahead and bought Batman and Robin for the heck of it. It’s funny to put on in the background when there’s people over doing something other than watching movies. I didn’t care for Batman or Batman Returns though.

Did not care for The Big Lebowski.

This may not really count, since I don’t know how most feel about Possession, but I was very disappointed by it - specifically, the casting. Jennifer Ehle was far too soft and girly to be Christabel LaMotte, and the decision to turn weedy, introverted, intellectual Roland Mitchell into beefcake Aaron Eckhart (and make him an American to boot) was unabashed pandering.

Of course, Possesion (the novel) - is one of my all time favorite books, so I was probably going to hate any film made of it.

Another positive vote for Stardust. Tristram lost a bit of character development - we missed seeing him go from a dorky dreamer to a great leader - but Claire Danes as the star was good, and Michelle Pfieffer was perfectly servicable as the witch.

The Man Who Knew Too Little is a Bill Murray flick that everyone thinks is stupid but I think is a brilliant comedy with great performances. Also the Disney musical Newsies is quite good though it suffers from a couple of hokey performances. I think it was way ahead of the times, foreshadowing the resurgence of live-action musicals. It was and still is treated unfairly by professional and amateur critics.

While Quentin Tarantino seems to either turn people completely on or off, almost everyone from my generation loves him. I think his films are pure crap, each one I’ve seen has actively made me angry at how poor the storytelling is. I keep falling for the hype and saying never again. I finally relented and saw Inglorious Basterds, thinking maybe this one did have some value given all the positive reviews. Nope. Even Nazi killing can’t save Tarantinos knack for making utterly boring and pointless films.

You are not alone. Goldeneye is the best bond film ever made. Period. Exclamation point!

There’s this ensemble heist movie, Smokin’ Aces that I rented just to get a 7th weekly rental for cheap because I’m like that. While I can’t say I like the whole movie and I never want to see it again, I really appreciated a certain scene with Ben Affleck.
He’s standing in a parking lot with his crew, being an ass and a car pulls up, cranking out some lousy metal. I thought, “wouldn’t it be cool if Affleck died right now,” and he did. Hooray!

I have nothing against Ben Affleck and like some of his movies.
