Movies that everyones loves...except you

What movies have you seen that have been praised and hyped by virtually everyone, but that ended up being extremely disappointing?

I absolutely hated Ghost Dog after being told by everyone how amazing it was.

I’ve never seen a film mishandle tone and pacing as badly as is done here. The connection between the ancient samurai code, urban ghettos, and bumbling italian gangsters who watch cartoons was probably supposed to be profound…but it’s not. Even the quotes from the samurai text are comically nonsensical and out of place at times.

I watched the “Behind the Scenes” feature on the DVD to see how they managed to cram so much absurd self-important tripe into the movie’s running time, and came away with the distinct impression that the director was mentally retarded.

Not that there’s anything wrong with being a retarded film director…oh hell, yes there is

Pulp Fiction

I have already been out-voted by the entire planet, but I would rather have my genitals gnawed on by savage animals than be forced to sit through “The English Patient” again.

I think I actulally yelled back to the screen “Will you just let the sonovabitch die so we can get out of here?”

I have refused to see “Chocolat” because I have not yet forgiven Juliette Benoche(sp?) for this boring peice of garbage.

::sadly missing his long sig::

Well I sure as hell could have done without Forrest Gump.

anything with any of the actors from Friends in it. It doesn’t matter which Friend or which movie, they’re all absolute torture.

I’ve always found Braveheart to be vastly overrated.

I liked Ghost Dog. But then, I’m a fan of Jim Jarmusch films.

I also liked Pulp Fiction.

But I’ll have to agree with Frumious Bandersnatch. I hated The English Patient.

Titanic

I can’t buy Leonardo DiCaprio as a leading man and it ruined the movie for me.

I have to agree with Purd Werfect. I did not like Forrest Gump and thought The Shawshank Redemption (which, IIRC, was nominated for Best Picture the same year) infintely more deserving of the Oscar.

As Good As It Gets with Jack Nicholson… ohhhh I can’t stand it!

Other bad popular movies are:

Twister
Any New James Bond Movie
Blair Witch Project
True Lies
All Lethal Weapon Movies

Here’s my two:

It’s a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Story.

prepares to get stoned

God, I hated this movie.
And I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again–American Beauty.

You’ll be happy to know hat Pepper Mill and I agree with you. We hated The English Patient

I don’t understand the appeal of **It’s a Wonderful Life **, either. My fantasy alernative is version where Mr. Potter, the Barrymore character, is about to throw himself off the bridge, but is prevented by a devil-in-training who shows him how different life would have been in Bedford Falls if he’d never livd. Everthing is so cloyingy sweet that he resolves to be even more Scrooge-like in the future.

“And just remember, every time you hear fingernails scratching on a blackbord, a Devil gets his Horns.”

I’m a big Jean Shepherd fan, so I kind of liked A Christmas Story, but Pepper Mill hates it with a passion.

Oh, yeah, I almost forgot – We both hated The Blair Witch Project, too. I refer to it (you can tell I see too much Disney Channel) as The Boo in the Big Blair House.

Titanic used to fit the bill, but the “everybody loves it” period is now safely fading, I do believe.

Gladiator I can very happily live the rest of my days without ever seeing again. I didn’t detest it on the level of the aforementioned tripe, my rating of it is simply, “enh.”

I had some friends rave on about The Spanish Prisoner, which I found profoundly underwhelming, plot twists for the sake of plot twists and not for anything more.

Easy Rider.

Really.

Well gee, let me see… movies that everyone loved but I hated. That would have to be… everything produced in the US that was released in the year 2000. And I see no signs of that changing yet (but I haven’t seen “Pollock” yet).
The year 2000 was widely regarded as the worst year in filmmaking history. I recently read a story of a world film festival that celebrated the best films of 2000. They didn’t pick one single film from the US, except American Beauty which strictly speaking, wasn’t eligible because it was released in 1999. Oh yes, the jury bent over backwards to give Hollywood a chance. Too bad Hollywood films just suck.

I hated Blair Witch and Forrest Gump too.
And I really hated What Lies Beneath, what a dog.

Sounds like the plot of the Blackadder Christmas Carol!

Any movie that “transcends the genre” gets my vote.

Saving Private Ryan was just a war movie.

Crouching Dragon, Hidden Penguin, or whatever, was just
a martial arts movie.
