I didn’t like The Dark Knight, either. As a Heath Ledger fan, way before he was the joker, I don’t think it’s his best role. So, I kind of have a resent for that movie. I think to a big portion of people he’ll be known as “that guy who won the Oscar, because he died”. Then again, the way the Oscars were held that year I’m glad he was cremated or they would dragged his dead body on stage for views.
57 is hardly a good review. :dubious:
I’ve never gotten how Nicholson has gotten so far in Hollywood. He has limited range, lost his looks and body fairly young (he was very handsome in his early career), and from things I’ve heard he is very difficult. Why does everyone in Hollywood kiss his ass?
Because people are willing to pay to see him in films.
I agree with you 100% about Nicholson. In fact, I was discussing “The Departed” with my buddy, and we both agreed that Nicholson’s “Whitey Bulger” like mob boss character would have been much more interesting if it had been played by either Martin Sheen or Alec Baldwin. As much as I enjoyed Nicholson’s performance in “A Few Good Men” the fact of the matter is that ANY competent actor could have played the role of Colonel Jessup just as effectively if not better. If I had to say that Jack Nicholson actually did some real acting in recent years, it would have been his performance in “About Schmidt” which in my opinion was not a very interesting or enjoyable movie to have to sit through, but I will give Jack kudos for his portrayal in that film; it’s probably one of the few times I have actually seen him ACT.
Here’s movies I hate. I’d have to watch them again to give better reviews but here’s what I remember:
The Hangover. Biggest comedy ever and I barely cracked a smile the whole movie.
Attack the Block. Holy balls was it boring.
The Raid (or The Raid Redemption). I kept hearing that it was an action film the likes of which we’ve never seen before. Turned out to be a run of the mill martial arts flick. Nothing new here and done better elsewhere.
The Departed. It’s like Scorsese just discovered cell phones and decided he had to make a movie about them. The only part I really liked was Dicaprio’s death. No long drawn out speech, just open the door and splat! You don’t see that with heros very often.
The Big Lebowski. Tedious reminder that stoners who say “fuck” every three words and can’t pay their rent are in fact losers and should be hated, and I do hate them. And I hate this movie.
Movies I like:
Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. It’s not great but it’s fun. Bill Murray’s obsession with techno music, the good correspondence stock, sending a red cap and a speedo to people…
Spartan. Fairly realistic action movie. Val Kilmer’s delivery is really strange. I chalk it up to the idea that he’s been in the military so long that he isn’t very good at social stuff. Once I decided that, everything fell into place to make it a good movie. If I didn’t decide that, I’d have hated it.
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. Weird homage to 50s serials. Kinda funny. Watchable.
I never said it was. I was responding to someone saying that everyone thinks they are garbage.
That’s why I wrote “And this is “garbage”?” The clue is in the post.
Well, it might suprise you, but most bronies don’t like the earlier generations of MLP.
They see it as childish rubbish
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow wasn’t an homage to 50s serials – it was an homage to 30s pulp fiction like G8 and his battle aces, with a side of 1930s/40s comic books and serials (serials were dying by the 50s).
I loved it, myself. It’s more than watchable – it’s underrated.
Another vote for the Lord of the Rings movies. All of them.
Walking, walking and more walking. Endless characters who all lack any depth or personality. Seven endings. It was just terrible. That so many people love them is mystifying.
Tim Burton’s Batman is awful, yet it gets a lot of love.
Also, every other Tim Burton movie. I’m not aware of him ever making a good one.
Just going with ones that I didn’t see already listed (in most cases, I agree with the majority instead of the poster - or feel lukewarm about it, neither liking nor disliking strongly)
a movie I don’t like that everyone seems to like:
Silence of the Lambs
- I like Jodie Foster’s acting, but I don’t really care for most of the movies she is in. The over-hyped level of suspense they often go for and the exaggerated bad guys ring false to me nearly every time.
a movie I like that no one much seems to like:
Aeon Flux
- In addition to a no worse than usual nonsense mystical/sci fi plot, it had gorgeous cinematography and credible performances.

I hate Star Wars. I didn’t see the first trilogy until I was about twenty, and then I thought it was a horribly-acted trite space opera. I saw Phantom Menace and my opinion was unchanged except it also made me hate CGI itself for a while. I know people who are obsessed with Star Wars and it just makes me sad.
I love the David Lynch version of Dune. A lot of people don’t, but that’s a nigh-impossible book to film–especially if you’re doing a two-hour movie. Miniseries, maybe. A very *long *miniseries.
I saw Shutter Island at the beginning of 2010 and *Inception *near the end of the year. As soon as Mal showed up in Inception, I said “Oh no, is this another Leonardo DiCaprio’s crazy wife movie?” (I liked *Shutter Island *much better–it was the #2 best movie I saw that year. #1 was The Ghost Writer.)
