Movies That End With the Main Character's Death - Spoilers Obviously

Um, Titanic, d’uh.

So, are you saying that you quit watching once Sofia got killed?

Return of the Jedi.

See, I was going to post that one, but the OP stated that the death scene had to occur at the very end of the movie, roll credits. We might have to make an exception for Titanic, though.

I was going to say “The Professional,” but it has a scene with the little girl putting flowers on his grave, so I’ll have to go with the very disturbing “Casino” instead. Robert DeNiro. Blown to bits. End of flick.

 Are there two endings to this movie? Like one for television and one in the “real” movie?

Uh, no. DeNiro’s character is not killed in the explosion at the beginning of the film. You must not have watched it all the way through.

Suicide Kings.

I think. Haven’t seen it in awhile.

Yeah, I just had that argument with my husband. And lost. :smack: Very smugly pulled out the DVD director’s cut, played the ending over 3 times. It was in the beginning. He turns the key in the ignition and goes boom.

Mea culpa.

Yeah, he dies at the very end. It’s after the scene where Sofia casts off this mortal coil.

Casino Royale. Everyone dies at the end.

“Shoot straight, you bastards! Don’t make a mess of it.”

Guess so.

A few others:

  1. “Electraglide in Blue,” starring Robert Blake. He’s a motorcycle cop who gets blown away at the end by the hippies he’d helped out.

  2. “The Vanishing.” Not the awful remake with Kiefer Sutherland, but the original. (Okay, TECHNICALLY the guy is still alive, but…)

  3. “Beneath the Planet of the Apes.” Of course, EVERYBODY dies at the end of that one!

  4. “Night of the Living Dead.” After surviving the night, and eluding the zombies, Ben gets gunned down by the sheriff and his men, anyway.

Not too sure about this one either.

If you’re talking about Vader biting the big one, there are certainly several other (crucial) scenes that follow.

In the original they do the widely-despised Ewok song that I never had a problem with, then in the director’s cut there is the celebration-around-the-universe thing which can’t be considered an improvement.

Either way, it’s not main character dies-roll the credits.

Not to pick nits or anything.

Hamlet

Wicker Man.

Well, we don’t actually see him die, but he’s definately not going anywhere.

It’s been a while since I saw it, but the credits don’t roll after Hamlet’s death. There’s a lot of talking and stuff before end.

I don’t remember the ending to Omega Man clearly enough to be sure. Is Chuck’s death the final scene?

I was going to say “Breaking the Waves” and “King Kong”, but the only other I can think of that really fits the criteria (no other scene, no dialogue) is:

Looking for Mr. Goodbar

How many movies start with the main character’s death? I can think of two classics off the bat …

That depends on whether you consider the cop or the demon to be the main character. At the beginning and end of the movie, Azazel says in Denzen Washington’s voice, “That was the day I almost died.”

Then there’s Resevoir Dogs, where everybody dies.
